HISTORY

The philologist transcribes and translates letters written by indigenous peoples who fought on opposite sides of the Pernambuco rebellion.

The six letters of the ancient tupi, written by indigenous peoples during the Brazilian colonial period, were finally deciphered and translated into Portuguese by the philologist and lexicographer Eduardo Navarro from the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP). This is the only correspondence known to date written after the invasion of Pernambuco by the Dutch, funded by the West India Company, in 1630.

For 24 years, the Dutch dominated most of the east coast of northeastern Brazil, with the exception of Bahia. In 1645, the Luso-Brazilians rebelled and sparked a conflict that became known as the Pernambuccan Rebellion and lasted until 1654. The indigenous people of Potiguar also took part in the battles. “In relation to each other, they were known as Cameroon and were divided during the war. Some stayed with the Luso Brazilians, while others joined the Dutch. In 1645, they exchanged these letters, ”the researcher says.

Eduardo Navarro / USP / Royal Library of The HagueThe manuscripts, preserved for almost 400 years in the Royal Library of The Hague in the Netherlands, have been known since 1885. However, they have not yet been fully deciphered and translated, despite previous attempts, such as that of an engineer. Teodoro Sampaio (1855-1937)), who learned about their existence from the historian José Jigino Duarte Pereira (1847-1901), who discovered them. In the 1990s, linguist Arion Rodriguez (1925–2014) of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) visited the Royal Library in The Hague and obtained copies of the aforementioned letters, which Navarro had access to. “I realized that no one can translate the letters, because there was no dictionary in the ancient tupi. So I developed Ancient Tupi Dictionary: A Classical Indigenous Language of Brazil [Global Editora, 2013]in order to translate documents later, ”explains the philologist.

There were several problems. One is that Potiguars were literate in Portuguese and used the Latin alphabet to write in their own language, making it difficult to interpret the letter. “For example, they didn’t use clear spelling rules and wrote a lot of words together,” comments Navarro.

Translation of documents contributes to both history and linguistics. For the story, for providing information about the uprising in Pernambuco, unknown until that time, such as, for example, the names of the deceased leaders of Potiguara and the places of the conflict. For linguistics, showing the stage of development of tupi in the 17th century.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
