“This is my first time on the field and I know everything I need to do. How to attack, how to defend, standard provisions. ”; “The fact that he taught me to know the game was cruel. If I was able to extend my career, it was thanks to him. ” These two statements were made by Brazilian players Gustavo Scarpa and defender Luizao, who have been professionals for several years and have several coaches behind them. They mentioned Abel Ferreira and Jorge Jesus. The last two champions are Libertadores. It is an accident?
First, it is necessary to distinguish between Jorge Jesus and Abel Ferreira. The age difference between them naturally indicates different generations. The influences of a coach and an athlete are not the same, and so is training as a coach. Jesus always loves to emphasize how he based his method of working on observation as an athlete and created training exercises based on play situations.
He established this way of managing teams and was responsible for the development of several players over the past two decades, and also recently formed the best team on Brazilian soil. To this day, Flamengo fans have gone astray. Not only in the tactical organization that he gave to the team at every moment of the game, but also in the incessant demand for improvement in order to get the most out of each athlete.
Abel was a prominent national right-back, but he already has an academic background. He drank from the fountain, which has revealed many good Portuguese trainers in the current century. At Braga, he managed to change the style of the team and make the club the team with the lowest investment, which most worried Benfica, Porto and Sporting. In Palmeiras, he went down in history as the biggest winner of the Copa Libertadores.
Both have their drawbacks, which is natural for all professionals, but they brought something necessary to Brazilian football. Understand that a person, no matter how good they are at a collective sport like soccer, will always be harmed if they are not placed in a context that is favorable to them. The time when the championship was determined only by talent is over. He continues to define games, but in a broader sense he will be surrendered by the one who better organizes the team.
It is very important that this debate is increasingly being raised in Brazil. A land of talent and the largest number of differentiated players in football history, it has always built on this to make a name for itself. Few collectives were better structured teams. When they first appeared, they received very unfair nicknames, such as Brazil in 1994, with the most possession and the most realistic chances of scoring in this Cup, but today many people still call “retranqueiro”.
It’s not about relegating individual talent to the background. Coaches who dominate all organizational processes at different stages of a football match are essential to accurately enhance the decision-making ability of these talents. The actions on the field are still played out by the players. Providing the best scenario for quality and making the best decisions is a big cat leap, and it is the responsibility of coaches.
Finding places in closed defense, as it was in the case between Palmeiras against Flamengo, is no longer as easy as in an era of long individual searches, natural holes in defensive systems and a physical side less present on the field. It is necessary to regularly occupy spaces, well-coordinated movements, variability of moves, an understanding of the best attack scenario. Points, which were lacking in the red-and-blacks with Renato, which I warned about here several times, even on the days of victories and defeats.
If Michael’s ball, 42 feet in the second half, had entered, the champion would have been different, but the way he achieved victory would not have changed. The talented Palmeiras de Abel Ferreira, even with the necessary questions about his offensive play and close to defeat in the final stage, was more organized than the very talented Flamengo. Even in what characterizes him least of all, the setting in the offensive phase presented a more detailed content.
By counting points and bids, without understanding how they were generated, we will encourage Brazilian football to become more and more “peripheral” to the best level in the four lanes. Let more and more Abeis and Jorges come to Brazil. We need to improve the training of everyone who plays sports here. From coaches to fans, journalists, players in top hats.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
