Wines from Portugal: White and Sparkling Casal Garcia - Best Selling Portuguese Wines in Brazil | Companies

A sparkling white wine with a low alcohol content (9.5%), produced in the Vinho Verde region, launched almost a century ago for a female audience, is the best-selling Portuguese wine in Brazil. In the hands of the same Guedes family, since its inception in 1939, Casal Garcia has been the flagship and cheapest product of the Aveleda winery.

In 2020, more than 2 million bottles were sold to Brazil, which is the third market for the brand in the world after Germany and the USA. In the United States, the largest buyer, about 3 million bottles were sold last year. Currently, Aveleda’s Portuguese market is limited to 26% and the winery continues to grow globally.

“We’ve grown a lot in this pandemic,” says Nuno Barros, commercial manager for the Brazilian market for Aveleda, who attributes this to a supermarket strategy that accommodated longer stays at home and larger purchases, including more wine expenses.

The brand is horizontal and has developed into a family over time. There are twelve labels today, including wine, sangria, and sparkling wine. One of them, Casal Garcia Sweet, is the third best-selling Portuguese label here. “We are betting on a sweeter wine because there is a market for it, but we were far from imagining how successful it was. Sweet was released four years ago and is already the second bestseller after white. Rosé is the third, ”says Barros.

If Casal Garcia is the entry-level product of Aveleda and has the greatest commercial success, the winery has a large portfolio, is positioned in various segments and has brands such as Quinta Vale D. Maria, a prestigious name in Douro, whose label is simpler, costs R $ 140. and the most expensive one is over 3,000 reais. In the last two Wine of Portugal competitions, 2019 and 2021, Quinta Vale D. Maria (Vinha da Francisca) has won the best red wine in Douro and Portugal. At Interfood, the exclusive distributor of Aveleda, it costs R $ 1,100.

Aveleda is Portugal’s largest green wine producer and exporter. In 2020, it earned 40 million euros, employs 150 employees, and produces 20 million bottles a year, of which 16 million are from Casal Garcia. In other words, the brand accounts for 70% of the winery’s production and is exported to more than 75 countries around the world.

Barros says the brand’s Brazilian success was the result of economic immigration that occurred during the Portuguese dictatorship that lasted from 1933 to 1974. “The patricians had to take their things and Casal García could not miss the Portuguese table. In the beginning, most of it was exported to Rio. ” He adds that the brand’s bank is already on sale in the Portuguese market for € 2, and negotiations are underway here.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
