The technology community is demonstrating against the racial bias of facial recognition programs

The following is a facial recognition algorithm that critics should not consider nominal value.

On Tuesday, a group of more than 1,000 technology professionals – including artificial intelligence, machine learning, legal researchers and anthropology – issuing public letters Upcoming bashing papers detail the development of a face recognition program that claims to be able to predict if someone will become a villain.

Problem? Many signatories of the letter agree that crime cannot be predicted without prejudice, although the report claims “80% accuracy and without racial bias,” and compares the method with “racial science” which has long been disputed.

The paper – by two professors and graduate students at Harrisburg University in Pennsylvania – was determined to be published by Springer Nature in an upcoming collection, Wired report.

Nevertheless, a Have a press release from universities that have teased publications since they were deleted – and now, Springer Nature tweeted that it will not publish papers.

The more than 1,000 groups of people who signed the letter, collectively calling themselves the Coalition for Critical Technology, say Harrisburg University research has a claim that “is based on unhealthy scientific places, research, and methods that … have [been] indisputable for years. “They add that, because of racial bias in the US police, every new algorithm intended to predict criminality inevitably breeds such systemic bias.

This is not the first time a face recognition program for crime has caused alarm. In June, Amazon banned police from using facial recognition software, Recognition, for one year in Congress’s efforts to regulate technology. Research shows that Recognition misidentifies African-Americans and Asians more often than white people. And at the end of 2019, a study led by the US government concluded that a facial recognition program mistakenly identifies people of color more often – with “demographic differences,” making people of color more vulnerable, in part, to false accusations.

“Crime is one of the most prominent problems in modern society,” Harrisburg Ph.D. student Jonathan W. Korn – a former New York police officer – said in a press release that was removed since then, Wired reported. “The development of machines capable of performing cognitive tasks, such as identifying crime [a] someone from their face image, will allow significant benefits for law enforcement agencies and other intelligence services to prevent crime from occurring in designated areas. “

Korn and co-authors of another paper, Nathaniel Ashby, did not respond to Wired’s request for comment. Springer Nature also did not respond to their requests for comment.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
