In recent weeks, Abel Ferreira and Vitor Pereira, the managers of Palmeiras and Corinthians respectively, have been in the headlines after performances that drew particular reactions from the group. On the Palmeiras side, the annoyance came from rival technicians, while the Corinthians player caused dissatisfaction mainly among his fans.
And all this happened when an old acquaintance of the duo Abel and VP was in Brazil. Rui Quinta is the patrician of trainers Verdão and Timão and is on Brazilian soil in an exchange of sorts in the main categories of Portuguesa Santista.
At the age of 62, the professional has an extensive career as a coach, which began in 1992 in the training categories of athletes in Portugal, when he met the boy Abel in Penafiel, and later, later, was the assistant to the responsible Vitor. Porto at the beginning of this decade.
in conversation with LANS!Rui went into detail about his involvement with the pair of trainers and the personality of each of them, which is still reflected in the work they do here.
ABEL FERREIRA – FRIEND FOR LIFE
When Rui Quinta decided to quit playing football, he immediately went to work at the Penafiel base, where he met a 14-year-old boy named Abel Ferreira, who played as a midfielder, but at that moment he thought about leaving football. offered to play on the right flank. There you can already see how weighed his conviction
– Abel was a Penafiel player, when I got there, he was under 15 years old, he was 14 years old. He played in the center of midfield, then he was offered to play in the position of a defender, at first he did not accept much, he thought of leaving football, but then he established himself as a full-back, and this is where he made his career at a high level.
– At the age of 15, Abel already had a very bright character trait, this reaction that he had at that time to leave, then return, which was an indicator of the convictions with which he was marked. He has always been the person you see in press conferences, very competitive, there are no two ways to be when we compete, we can’t be two ways, we have to be focused on our own, said Rui Quinta.
The Portuguese coach recalled Abel’s trajectory as a player as he gradually rose through the ranks until he landed at a top club like Sporting. For Quinta, it depends not only on skill, but also on mentality and character, which the current coach Verdao already showed at the time and remains so.
– In the end, he forced himself on the professional Penafiel team in the Portuguese second division. It was the first step, then he was hired by Vitoria de Guimarães, in the top 5 of Portugal, then he went to Braga and Sporting, that is, always in the process of growth, this has nothing to do with the quality of football, it has nothing to do with mentality, except for ability , one must have a mentality, character, this is clearly the image of a leader that he conveys today, his personality.
Rui Quinta was very passionate about Abel’s personality and his firm stance on his beliefs, and he is proud that his friend attaches great importance. The coach even recalled the episode in Portugal, which began the trajectory of Palmeirense in the football elite.
– He had an incompatibility with the president of Sporting because Abel is a man of principles, a man of character, and he is very proud to understand how important he attaches to this. With that, he moved to Braga and Abel’s team played well, after the B team he moved to the A team, which continued to play with his characteristic.
Still on Abel Ferreira, Rui Quinta believes that he still has room to grow and that only those who have the opportunity to do so are at this football level, as in the case of Commander Verdão, mainly due to the alignment won with the squad .
– What I have no doubt is that Abel was a coach ten years ago, today he is different, and in ten years he will be different, much more competent and much better prepared. Life allows us to do this. His merit and ability he had to do this in a higher dimension. And only those who master these assumptions about the game and character are there, because when you are a leader and you see it in Palmeiras, because the players are aligned with him until death, and this is an advantage,” Rui said before closing:
– He has been in the club for three years already, I had the honor to visit him and felt the mood of everyone, everyone who is engaged in serving the club. When this is achieved, the degree of perfection is the highest.
VITOR PEREIRA – “BROTHER”
In contrast to his relationship with Abel Ferreira, whom he met when the Palmeiras native was still a boy, Rui Quinta met Vítor Pereira when he was older, seeking to graduate with a coach. The closeness was so great that they became “brothers”.
– I met Victor at a coaching course at a high school in Ponte de Lima. Vitor received a second coaching education, there are four of them in Portugal. We went to teach and he was there. That’s where I met him. He stood out miles and miles from everyone else in the way he reasoned, the way he suggested the exercises that I defended. We realized it was someone else and we had such a close relationship,” Rui stated before adding:
Victor is my brother. We joined in Porto for two years. During these two years we shared our lives day by day. I have eternal gratitude with him for the opportunity, and I have a different friendship with him, because we live together in the same club, in the same happiness. This brought us very close.
As Rui said above, they split the Porto team when VP was the head coach and invited him to the coaching staff. However, before that, they had to fight.
– We have been opponents several times, we have curiosity, we have drawn all the games that were coming to us. The year he was an assistant at Villas Boas in Porto, we went out to dinner through a mutual friend and talked for hours. The next year he was invited to coach Porto’s first team and I was going to coach a second division club and he said, “Don’t leave because if I’m Porto coach I want you to come and helped me. “I said I would be champion and we went two years in a row.
To LANS!Rui Quinta spoke a bit about his experience with Vitor Pereira to explain how the Corinthians coach works and how he got to the point of establishing himself in his career by reaching the top while working in different places around the world.
– I haven’t lived with Vitor in football for 10 years. Vitor was in different countries, in Asia, Europe and now in America. From what I know, he is an extremely over-the-top coach, obsessed with everything he does, the details, to make sure everything goes the way he intended. He has the ability to show the players what is best for each of them.
– His style of play is attractive because he likes to have the ball, to command the game. This is a team that plays to win. Sometimes he even exaggerates how he spends his time worrying about team and player related things. I told him several times that it is important that we take a little walk, freshen up, so that we can return with energy at the top. He is a coach who does not give up.
– Vitor made himself, he came from below, from a difficult social environment where his colleagues fell apart in life, and he went to study, graduated, trained at the base, basically, and now at the top. He is a man with an extraordinary heart, he cares a lot about the well-being of people, does good, helps. Personally, he is shy, reserved, and doesn’t like too much attention.
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ABEL AND VITOR
These are two people who made themselves in football, no one gave anything, everything was conquered by them, the way they work, ideas, the way they coped with life’s difficulties. It marked them. For some reason they work at a high level. The characteristics of the best coaches are largely related to each other. They are very competitive, they go out of their way to protect their players and demand limits from them. There is no other way to win.
