about the author
José Vera, 71, is a self-taught artist born to “tell stories.” Serra Bonita village (Ivitiy Poran), located between the municipalities of Karaa, Makine and Riosinho, has served as an inspiration and reference point.
“I wrote here, in this house, in my village, among my family,” the artist recalls.
“I didn’t go anywhere. I got the message directly for myself, ”he explains. Pencil and pen drawings reflect the spirituality of the people. Mbia Guarani and its relationship to biodiversity.
Environmental and social messages permeate the work. With names like O Lua (Jaxy), O Sol (Quaray), Our real mother (Nandeksi ankhetengua), Erva-mate (KaꞋa), School (NhemboꞋea), the themes of the book provide lessons for indigenous peoples and especially non-indigenous peoples.
The stories show the intimate relationship of indigenous peoples with the territory. And that is why they shed light on the relevance of the struggle that indigenous peoples waged to self-delineate this territory three decades ago.
