Study in Portugal shows cancer patients develop antibodies against COVID-19 - National

A year has passed since the start of the pandemic, when the internal medicine team of the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon realized that it was necessary to continue clinical research on how the new coronavirus manifests itself in cancer patients. The result has just been published in a scientific journal “Oncologist“and shows that cancer patients produce antibodies regardless of the severity of the cancer.

The study included 72 patients (including 19 cancer patients infected with COVID-19). Among cancer patients, more than half (57.9%) showed a strong serological response, compared with 42.1% who had a weaker response. The study points to the fact that patients underwent chemotherapy 14 days prior to infection, which is the reason for the poor response.

“Recent chemotherapy treatment may be associated with poor serological response among cancer patients. Cancer patients have a weaker antibody response compared to patients without cancer, ”the study said.

Miguel Esperanza Martins, a trainee oncologist with an internship at the Internal Medicine Service who participated in the study, notes another telling result. “In terms of positivity, it was that, regardless of the ability to produce antibodies and antibody levels in these patients, there was no difference in their clinical evolution, which is a very interesting result, but it should be interpreted with caution given the fact that we have a relatively small sample, ”he said.News diary“.

The study included a different spectrum of severity of cancer. For the study, “patients with mild symptoms and more severe symptoms” were selected., whose samples were collected “at two different times, on admission and after seven days,” says the same newspaper Katarina Mota, an internal medicine specialist who helped create the project. This method allowed us to obtain “biological samples from patients in a mild stage of the disease and already in a very serious stage, because some of them went into intensive care,” he continues.

The collection of data for the study began on March 15, 2020 and was carried out until June 17 of the same year, after which the data was sent to the laboratory of the group of Mark Veldhoen, research coordinator and principal investigator of the Laboratory of Immune System Regulation at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, João Lobo Antunes (iMM), who worked in collaboration with Portuguese medical teams, which included trainees in oncology and internal medicine.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
