Ron Rivera is working on a new nickname with the owner of Redskins

Ron Rivera is working on a new nickname with the owner of Redskins

Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera said on Saturday that he had worked for more than a month with owner Dan Snyder to change the team’s name, and he hoped the changes could be made before mid-September.

“If we finish it on time for this season, it will be amazing,” Rivera told the Washington Post in a telephone interview.

The team announced Friday that they were conducting a “thorough review” of the team’s name, and several outlets reported a very likely change, with the possibility of coming before the September 13 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rivera told the Post that Snyder, who said in 2013 he would “never” change the name, had discussed possible changes for more than a month and approached the NFL about it in mid-June.

Rivera said he and Snyder had come up with several names, including two particular Rivera likes, but he refused to give details. The coach, who is the son of an Army officer, did say he and Snyder wanted the name to pay homage to the military, Rivera mentioned in a statement on Friday.

Firm pressure to change names has increased this week. The main sponsor of FedEx – which has the naming rights for the team stadium, and whose founder and CEO is the owner of a minority team – PepsiCo and Nike each voiced a preference to change the name, along with a number of smaller partners.

The Nike website removed all Redskins merchandise on Thursday, and Washington remains the only one of 32 NFL teams that are no longer listed in the index.

The franchise began to use the Redskins nickname in 1933, when it was based in Boston and was previously called Braves. Team owner George Preston Marshall moved the club to Washington in 1937.

A Marshall statue was removed from the former Washington team site, RFK Stadium, on June 19 after protests seeking racial equality after George Floyd’s death. Under Marshall leadership, Washington was the last integrated NFL team, adding its first Black player in 1962.

What new name it might not be clear. But in 2009, Washington City Paper said Snyder had previously purchased franchise rights for the Arena Football League team and a registered trademark for the Washington Warriors name with a logo and helmet design featuring arrows and feathers.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
