Portuguese support allows Cape Verdean nurses to specialize in oncology – Observer

A protocol between the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology has allowed four nurses from a hospital on the island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde to specialize in oncology.

It came at the right time for me because we have had patients here in Sao Vicente who have been treated in Praia and in Portugal, and when they come back there is a need for continuity. Although we don’t have chemotherapy on the island, we have an oncology service, more in the sense of palliative care,” explained Lusa Nilza Delgado, a nurse with 17 years of experience at Dr. J. Baptista de Souza Hospital, Mindelo, and one of the new graduates .

The completion of the Postgraduate Course in Oncology Nursing for Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP), including four specialists from this hospital, in accordance with this protocol, was celebrated this Monday with a hybrid implementation, including with the participation of San Vicente. , I PALOP Cancer Care Congress.

Expats to PALOP sent 27 million in May, up 14.2%.

Training recognized by these professionals, allowed to improve the knowledge of nurses and their response to patientsafter a cancer diagnosis.

You should also try to shorten your hospital stay due to signs and symptoms. Because sometimes patients arrive, sign up for the oncology service in San Vicente, and then disappear, and no one knows where they are. So the goal is to treat these patients, provide information by speaking and listening, and taking care of them,” the nurse said.

For these Cape Verdean nurses, building support capacity and the psychological and emotional support that cancer patients need to be given were the highlights of this last year of training, completed with the support of Portuguese organizations.

It was not easy because we are professionals, heads of families, and yet, due to the pandemic, we had to go to online classes. It was intense. Half work in shifts and the other half work as usual, and we had to stick to schedules,” said Darlene Gomez, another of the nurses who graduated from graduate school.

“We know that with this training our patients will benefit too. We hope to bring additional value to the hospital and patients, because the nurse is involved in the rehabilitation, recovery and health promotion of patients. We promote their autonomy so that they feel welcome even after treatment,” he stressed.

According to data presented by Academician Lucio Santos at a congress attended by nurses from Portugal, Mozambique, Angola and Cape Verde, breast, cervical and prostate cancers are the most common in PALOP.

The most common malignant tumors in Africa are prostate cancer (about 23% of cases), liver cancer (about 8% of all cancers) and Kaposi’s sarcoma (about 7%). In females, breast cancer ranks first, which is about 25% all malignant tumors and cervical cancer, about 24%— said the expert.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
