Portuguese community in Canada breaks Guinness record by dancing vira
The Mississauga Portuguese Cultural Center in Canada broke the Guinness record this Saturday for the number of people dancing folklore.
“The Guinness record for the most people dancing a Portuguese folk dance at the same time was broken today, reaching 747 participants,” said Hanna Ortman, the event’s official judge.
The current record is held by Rancho Rendilheiras do Monte (Vila do Conde), who managed to gather 744 people in 2018 by dancing chulu for five minutes.
For more than five minutes, the contestants had to perform the choreography of the viragheral, a chosen dance, “to the best of their ability in that period of time”.
Andrew da Camara, one of the initiative’s main proponents, said he “was thrilled to see a dream come true.”
“Now it is difficult to explain. At first, when I had this idea, people told me that I was crazy, but anything is possible when you believe in something. Now we are thinking, after we break the Guinness record, what will be the next challenge,” he said.
The official also thanked all the communities involved in this project “for a good cause.”
An initiative called “Dance for those who can’t” also aimed to raise awareness of some of the problems in society, in honor of people with physical, mental and health problems who cannot dance.
Proceeds from the event will be distributed by the Luso Canadian Charitable Society, Canadian Cancer Society and Community Living Mississauga.
The event was followed by a show featuring several bands and musicians, including singer Rui Bandeira from Portugal.
The winner of the RTP da Canção festival in 1999 also danced the viru, showing that he was “satisfied with helping” the Portuguese community in Canada make history.
“It was a great honor for me to be the artist invited to this party, and her participation only demonstrates the strength of the Portuguese community in Canada and here in Mississauga,” he stressed.
The Guinness Book of World Records is published annually and contains a collection of world-renowned records, both in terms of human achievement and natural disasters.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.
Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
