Only one school in New York can say that is the men’s NCAA basketball champion

Only one school in New York can say that is the men's NCAA basketball champion

1 and the only … Coach to lead the New York City team to the NCAA men’s basketball title: Nat Holman

Time: March 28, 1950

Background: At that time, the NCAA Tournament included only eight teams and the East and West regions. CCNY, a team consisting of only New Yorkers, is not included in the top 20 of the AP season and is the last team invited to the NIT. After winning the NIT, CCNY was invited to the NCAA Tournament.

The Skinny: CCNY bit the State of Ohio by one point in the first round, defeating the Northern State in the semifinals and won by Bradley, 71-68, for the title, becoming the only school to have won the NIT and NCAA Tournaments in the same season. Irwin Dambrot was named the Most Achievement Player in the tournament, and Nat Holman appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” This will be the last time the Final Four is played at Madison Square Garden.

Others Coming Nearby: Two other coaches have led their team to the NCAA Tournament Tournament title match, Frank McGuire and St. John’s in 1952, losing to Kansas, and Howard Cann and NYU in 1945, fell into the State of Oklahoma. The last city team to reach the Final Four is St. John’s and Lou Carnesecca in 1985. They were destroyed by Georgetown, 77-59, in the semifinals. (Note: Janice Quinn trained NYU for the national Division III women’s title in 1996-97).

Quote: “More popular than the Yankees and Dodgers combined now,” Jimmy Post Cannon wrote about CCNY at the time.

The Tail: A national point-out scandal was revealed involving several CCNY players, destroying their NBA hopes and leading to team suspension in February the following year. The program switched from Division I to D-III and was never the same again.

Legacy: Holman was never directly linked to the scandal, but some of his legacy is still tarnished. A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the New York Basketball Hall of Fame, he trained CCNY from 1919-52 and had two other short assignments from 1954-56 and 1958-59. He compiled an overall record of 405-150 per Sports-Reference. Holman was a star player for NYU who played professionally for the original Celtics (not related to the Boston Celtics) when he started his coaching at CCNY.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
