Five iconic New York sports vocation stand the test of time

Bill Buckner's infamous flub in the 1986 World Series was memorably captured by Vin Scully.

This week The Post takes a new look at the “best of” New York’s sporting history – an area that is equally worthy of debate, but it has never been debated endlessly. Russ Hodges’s appeal of Bobby Thomson’s ‘Shot Heard’ Round the World “which led the Giants to the banner in 1951 was chosen as the best call in New York sports history. Here are five other major counterattacks that just failed:

May 27, 1994: Stephane Matteau sent Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final with a cover, Game 7 winning goal in a double OT. On a WFAN call, Howie Rose has a perfect level of excitement with the rhythm, “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! “It became more iconic after Rangers won the Cup for the first time in 54 years.

October 26, 1986: During Game 6 of the World Series, there were two memorable calls when a dribbler from the Mets’ Mookie Wilson passed the foot of the Red Sox’s first baseman, Bill Buckner. On NBC, Vin Scully said, “A little roller up first … behind the bag … it’s past Buckner!” On WFAN, Bob Murphy’s nickname is similar to, “Buckner got it!” When reviewed, Scully is a little better.

May 8, 1970: Willis Reed limped to the field to warm up before the NBA Finals 6. Marv Albert recorded the program’s famous call, saying, “Here it is Willis!” Reed hit two jumpers early in the game before Clyde Frazier took over to lead the Knicks to victory.

October 1, 1961: Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s one-season home run record with Phil Rizzuto via a radio call. The scooter said, “Hit far to the right … this could be that … far back there … Holy Cow! He did it!” Rizzuto, Shortstop Hall of Fame, is not a classic game played by players, but the call is pretty good.

October 2, 1978: Bucky Dent’s home run is not the end of the game, but Bill White’s call still has a place in the history of New York sports broadcasting. White said, “Far to the left … Yastrzemski won’t get it … this is a home run! Three run runs for Bucky Dent and the Yankees now lead with a score of 3 to 2.” And the Yankees went on to complete one of the greatest attacks in history baseball by defeating the Red Sox.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
