Coach Linda Rice searches for Triple Crown history at Belmont Stakes

Coach Linda Rice searches for Triple Crown history at Belmont Stakes

Linda Rice has recorded 2,018 wins on her way to becoming one of the most accomplished native female coaches in this sport. But New York-based horse racing lifers are still chasing a big one: victory in the Triple Crown race.

Rice will have another chance on Saturday with Max Player at Belmont Stakes as she tries to become the first female coach to ever win the Triple Crown leg.

“It would be very good to win one,” Rice said on Wednesday after Max Player pulled the third posting position with a 15-1 chance.

“Obviously a lot of things have changed in the last 100 years here. So there are more women training horses now than 100 years ago, so chances are, given a little more time, sooner or later, a woman will win this race. “

Max Player will be Rice’s third competitor for Triple Crown victory. The first came in 2003, when Supervisors placed fifth in the Belmont Region. He then burdened Kid Cruz in Preakness 2014 to finish in eighth place.

Rice is one of 10 female trainers to ride horses at the Belmont Stake. Dianne Carpenter became the closest to history in 1988, when her Kingpost came second after Risen Star. Sarah Lundy was the first female trainer to ride a horse at the Belmont Bet in 1984 with Minstrel Star.

“They haven’t given women enough time,” Rice said jokingly, laughing.

Rice grew up around horse racing in Wisconsin, where her father, Clyde, was a trainer. In 1987, at the age of 23, she herself was a licensed coach and in 2009 she became the first woman to win a training title on the American main racing circuit, when she cornered Todd Pletcher for the Saratoga summer meeting.

Three more New York training degrees later, Rice returned with Belmont competitors. He had to navigate uncharted territory to get there, with the coronavirus pandemic disrupting Max Player’s race schedule and forcing long layoffs into Saturday, but now he has another chance to make history.

“Horse racing now, we are happy to race,” Rice said. “Horse racing has gone through difficult times, as have other businesses in the economy with this pandemic. I want to see more women get more opportunities, and hopefully in time they will. “

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
