AmadoraBD Chooses "Balada para Sophie" for Best Comic by Portuguese Author - Observer

The graphic novel “Balada para Sophie” by Filipe Melo and Juan Cavia won the award for best comic strip by a Portuguese author at the AmadoraBD festival, the jury announced.

This Sunday, the festival announced the winners of the annual comic book award, reformulated and revised to just five categories, which recognize the production of Portuguese comics and edited in Portugal.

This year for the first time in the category of the best comic book by a Portuguese author, a cash prize of five thousand euros., and the jury decided to assign it to “Ballad for Sophie”.

Monsters, Gods and Us in “Ballad for Sophie”

Published in 2020 by Tinta-da-China and edited this year by Companhia das Letras, this graphic novel brings together Portuguese screenwriter Filipe Melo and Argentine designer Juan Cavia and its starting point is the rivalry between two French pianists, who in the 1930s competed in a competition of young talents.

The story is told from the perspective of one of the pianists, Julien Dubois, who, knowing himself at the end of his life, tries to redeem himself in the past in a lengthy interview with a journalist.

The jury of the 32nd edition of AmadoraBD also awarded the Ricardo Santo Revelation Prize for Planeta Psicose edited by Escorpião Azul. The award for the best fanzine or independent publication went to Joana Afonso with “Bestiário de Isa” in the author’s edition.

In this category, Rodolfo Mariano’s work “Bottom Up” was excluded from the list of nominees by the decision of the author and publisher of Chili Com Carne, a source in the organization explained to Lusa.

Portuguese publisher A Seita won the award for the best Portuguese comic book publication for Mathieu Bonomma’s book “Procura-se Lucky Luke”.

The AmadoraBD jury also considered the best foreign comics published in Portugal in recent months to be Burlão nas Indias by Alain Ayroles and Juanjo Guarnido, published by Ala dos Livros.

This year, the jury for the award included Pedro Cleto (representing the local government), Carlos Moreno (Portuguese Animation Club) and Daniel Lima (Ar.Co School).

The AmadoraBD Festival, which began on the 21st, is important again, with the novelty that the central core moves from the Forum of Luis de Camões to the Amador Ski Skating Park, which also features Bedeteca da Amador and the Municipal Gallery of Arthur Boal as an add-on. spaces. Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts.
