Zion Williamson must answer questions about Duke's improper benefits

Zion Williamson may have to answer the accusation that his parents requested and received benefits that were not permitted when he was at Duke.

On Tuesday, a Florida judge refused his request to keep discovering whether he violated NCAA rules when he played for Blue Devils. The ruling, by Florida 11th Circuit Court Judge David Miller, obliged Williamson to answer questions from lawyers representing Gina Ford and Prime Sports Marketing, the agency he initially signed after graduating from college.

Williamson, who later signed a contract with the CAA after withdrawing from the initial agreement, accused the contract with Prime Sports of violating the North Carolina Uniform Athlete Agent Act because the agency was not certified by the NBA Players Association or a registered athlete agent in North Carolina or Florida. Prime Sports sued, saying Williamson violated a five-year contract and the CAA broke the agreement.

Before Williamson had to comply with the ruling, his lawyer could appeal to the state’s Third District Court of Appeals. Last month, Ford’s lawyer asked Williamson to admit that his mother and stepfather asked for and received money, gifts and other benefits from Nike, Adidas, and people associated with Duke to attend the ACC School and use one of the company’s hidden products.

“The issue is complete canards and complete red herring,” attorney Jeffrey Klein, who represents Williamson, said in a virtual hearing on Tuesday morning. “[W]We believe that as a law, the law prohibits that contract. Problems with regard to amateur status, there are no problems with regard to amateur status, and in fact, if they want to know the problems regarding amateur status, eligibility is a determination made by the NCAA and made by Duke. I do not think it is relevant here to what is happening because frankly that determination has been made. … That does not waive their failure to comply with North Carolina law. “

Ford’s lawyer’s argument is that North Carolina’s law will not apply to Williamson if he receives benefits that will make him ineligible in his years at Duke.

“The NCAA is not the last arbiter of the matter,” lawyer Doug Eaton said. “We can determine that he did not qualify during this time period, which will be a defense of their claim that our contract is invalid. The purpose of this law is to protect athletes – students – real students, athletes – eligible students – from violent agent behavior. It was not designed to protect people who have received inappropriate benefits.

“If you receive inappropriate benefits, you are not a qualified athlete-student, and the NCAA can retroactly decide that you are not eligible. That had happened several times before. … This is not a unanimous determination that he is an eligible student-athlete, and we have the opportunity to prove that he is not qualified in that time frame, and that is what we will do. “

Method Media Bermuda will present the documentary FABRIC: Portuguese History in Bermuda on Thursday, December 29 at the Underwater Research Institute of Bermuda.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
