Why Scott Mayfield likes the Islanders title opportunity if the game continues
As Islanders began the third week of voluntary small group training and began to imagine teams with the full strength they could bring to the NHL 24 team tournament, there was still thought left that it might not produce results.
But it is difficult for Islanders to stop looking forward to Phase 4 of the NHL “Return-To-Play” plan, the start of the match in “hub cities,” given the projected team they have more complete than it was before the coronavirus pandemic closed the regular season 2019-20 more than three months ago.
For defender Scott Mayfield, skating next to Adam Pelech – who is expected to be sidelined throughout the season due to an Achilles injury – has strengthened his faith in what Islander can have if the league really achieves plans to restart.
Mayfield and Pelech skated together in Group 2 for Phase 2 Islanders skating, in which Devon Toews, Noah Dobson and Thomas Hickey also participated. Netminder Bridgeport Chris Dobson is also in Group 2.
“I think the layout we have, any team can win it,” Mayfield said in a Zoom call with reporters Monday afternoon. “We have an equally good opportunity, if not better, than anyone. We have healthy people and I hope we can come back and play.
“I know there are many things that must be solved, I know this is a financial obligation, that’s a health reason, there are so many boxes that need to be checked.”
The Islanders will also get back Johnny Boychuk, who missed the last three matches before the season was stopped after taking skates to a face that needed 90 stitches.
But after reports from the Tampa Bay Lightning closed their facilities over the weekend because of the many cases of the virus, there was a slight sense of worry that arose among several islanders.
“Over the weekend I thought there might be a bit of concern that arises in people’s minds,” Mayfield said.
Mayfield notes that he hasn’t been able to talk to every player on the team to find out how everyone feels, but it seems that some players are paying attention to the news and rather “changing” their views on the matter.
However, Phase 2 continues even though the NHL revealed in a statement Friday that 11 players of “excess 200” who have undergone several rounds of testing have tested positive for COVID-19.
The 27-year-old defender said that his team had taken extreme precautions to combat the contraction of the corona virus. For example, etiquette in the weight room has changed because players make sure not to pass the same burden around or look at each other to make sure they keep their distance.
Monday is also the first day coaches are allowed on the ice with the players. Mayfield said that Islanders assistant coach Jim Heller was on the ice with them.
Mayfield admitted that the last few weeks had been a “roller coaster” for him, trying to navigate a new routine while also keeping his focus to get back in shape. He believes if the league is able to continue the restart tournament, it will be a “mind test” to see who can get rid of the disruption and win the Stanley Cup.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
