What’s New from Top CDMO Samsung Biologics

Published

on

Over the last few years, Samsung Biologics has emerged as one of the leading CDMOs in a period dominated by the importance of fast, high-volume production of a range of pharmaceutical products.

CDMOs are contract development and manufacturing organizations, partnering with biopharmaceutical companies to help support their production abilities and provide a range of services to help get their products developed and manufactured at multiple scales.

Samsung Biologics has recently made a  global impact with a series of recent partnerships and announcements.

Partnership with Moderna

In May 2021, Samsung Biologics announced a manufacturing services  agreement with Moderna, a biotechnology company pioneering mRNA therapeutics and vaccines, to provide large scale, commercial fill-finish manufacturing for mRNA-1273, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

“This vaccine is paramount to people around the world in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and we truly appreciate our client Moderna for entrusting and choosing to partner with Samsung Biologics for the fill and finish of this important vaccine,” said John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics. “Due to the high level of urgency in supplying the vaccine to the global population, we have set immediate action plans and schedule to make mRNA-1273 available for commercial distribution in the early second half of 2021.”

Development of mRNA Vaccine Manufacturing Site

The first half of 2021 was dominated by the word ‘vaccine,’ as focus on the development of a COVID-19 vaccine turned to focus on how to manufacture these vaccines at scale and distribute them throughout the globe.

In this environment, the leadership of CDMO Samsung Biologics determined that expanded vaccine production capabilities would be central to the company’s future. That’s why Samsung Biologics has announced that it will add mRNA vaccine DS production to its existing primary CDMO manufacturing facility by this time next year.

“We are constantly assessing various ways that we can expand and diversify our current CDMO business portfolio to better serve the market,” said John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics. “We are committed to helping our clients provide quality treatments and vaccines to all those in need around the world, especially in difficult times like this, and with this extended capability, we hope to support our partners in bringing novel mRNA vaccines and therapeutics to market at a faster pace.”

New ISO Certifications in Multiple Areas

Samsung Biologics also recently acquired ISO  certifications for environmental management, occupational health and safety management, energy management, and business continuity management. These global certifications help formalize the CDMO’s commitment to industry-leading practices in everything from sustainability to continuity.

“We are extremely proud to obtain four global ISO certifications during a time where a high degree sustainable management system is vital, especially in light of COVID-19, to stably operate and supply crucial biomedicines for patients,” John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics, commented. “Samsung Biologics is a leading CDMO committed to taking responsibility and consideration of ESG factors across all of our business areas, and we will continue to enhance our capabilities to meet the evolving needs of clients whilst ensuring the safety and security of not only our people but also of the environment to ultimately create a better future for humanity.”

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
