Vils sculpture in Lisbon commemorating the first Portuguese to arrive in Korea will have a sister in the city of Tongyeong
The double sculpture by Alexander Farto, better known as Wils, commemorates the arrival in Korea in 1604 of the first Portuguese merchant João Mendez. Double, because in addition to the sculpture that was unveiled yesterday afternoon in Lisbon, at the Jardim das Docas da Ponte, another work by Wils will soon also decorate the city of Tongyong, where a Portuguese shipwrecked at the beginning of the 17th century while traveling on a Japanese boat on way to Nagasaki.
“The arrival of Joao Mendes in the city of Tongyong was a historic event that marked the beginning of a cultural exchange between Tongyong and Lisbon. I believe that the commemorative monuments designed by the famous Portuguese artist Vils contribute to a greater rapprochement between Portugal and Korea. “, – said the mayor of the city council of Tongyeong Chung Yonggi right by the Tagus River. Beside him, his colleague from Lisbon Carlos Moedas spoke about the double sculpture of Wils as a symbol of “two cities and two countries open to the world”, giving life to the relationship he wanted , “so that they are long and strong.”
The artwork, which is now part of the Lisbon landscape, consists of a Korean female figure and a graphic depiction of Korea, just as a sculpture in Tongyeong would depict a Portuguese male figure and a depiction of Portugal. Wils did not speak, but participated in the ceremony, having been invited by the mayor of Tongyeong to attend the opening in South Korea of a sister sculpture to the one in Lisbon.
The ceremony was attended by some Korean figures and representatives of the Portuguese-Korean community, such as cook Telmo Saraiva, who is married to a Korean woman and recently returned from a holiday in his wife’s country, said he made a special trip to Tongyeong to photograph the plaque that has commemorated the arrival of João Mendez since 2006. In fact, one of the photographs accompanying this text is his photograph, the only one taken in Korea. I also meet Byung Gu Kang, a professor of Korean history, culture and language at the University of Nova de Lisbon, who wrote an essay in Portuguese in 1990, just three years after the João Mendez documents were discovered. “Joao Mendes was a merchant and was in Cambodia, where the official Japanese fleet traveled. Attracted by what he had heard about Japan, where other Portuguese traded, he boarded one of the returning boats and became involved in a battle with the Korean fleet. fleet. Shipwrecked and his African servant, he was taken to the capital Seoul for interrogation. This is in 1604. It was later handed over to China.”
Korea had only recently become the target of a Japanese invasion, which was repelled by Admiral Yi Sun-sin with the support of the Ming Dynasty. “Eventually the Chinese handed João Mendes over to the Portuguese in Macau,” emphasizes Professor Kang, who acknowledges previous instances of Portuguese presence on the peninsula, but without documentary evidence or involvement of João Mendes, who is believed to be the first Westerner to set foot on the peninsula. a country located at the other end of Eurasia and referred to in Korean chronicles as Ji-Wan-Myung-Je-Su.
Also present at the unveiling of the Wheels sculpture, South Korea’s Ambassador to Portugal Cho Yong-mu was pleased with yet another proof of the excellent relationship between the two countries, which celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations last year. “The geographical distance between Korea and Portugal, located on the edge of Eurasia, is no longer an obstacle to exchange between the two countries. The installation of a monument to commemorate the arrival of Joao Mendes in Korea in Lisbon symbolizes the union between our peoples and is therefore very important,” said a diplomat from South Korea, a vibrant democracy and a prosperous economy.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.
Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
