TRE-SP starts receiving reports of political violence against women
The São Paulo Regional Electoral Court (TRE-SP) has established a human rights commissioner to receive complaints of political violence against women. The launch took place last Monday (December 13) in Sao Paulo.
The information was published on Thursday (16.12) in social networks promoter Gabriela Mansour, Coordinator of the National Ombudsman for Women of the National Council of Prosecutors (CNMP).
“This initiative allows women to fully enjoy political rights: vote, be a candidate, be elected and exercise their political mandate with independence, freedom and respect,” the prosecutor said.
The event was attended by the President of TRE-SP, Judge Valdir Sebastian de Nuevo Campos Junior, Judge Silmar Fernández, who is currently the Justice of the Peace and Ombudsman of the Court, and Election Judge Camille Castro, who was elected President of the National Council. which brings together election judges and hearings.
Currently, according to Mansour, 14 departments of the prosecutor’s office have already appointed ombudsmen exclusively for women, in addition to the CNMP. The judiciary also has representations at the High Court of Justice (STJ), the Courts of Minas Gerais (TJMG) and Espirito Santo (TJES), in addition to the TREs of Minas Gerais and Goias.
“By March, we want all departments of the state ministry to be covered by the ombudsmen, but especially considering the joining of electoral courts to protect women in elections,” he said.

Recently, the Electoral Court launched a national radio and television campaign to warn of the increasing incidence of political gender-based violence. One of the most famous cases was that of State MP Isa Penna from São Paulo, who was harassed by a colleague from Parliament.
“Through this episode, I became a reference point for other women suffering from various types of violence. It is important that other voices are heard in this struggle. We need investment to identify types of violence against women and how to tackle them through appropriate public policies. The matter is more serious than one might think, ”the MP said during the launch of the campaign.
The Ombudsman at the Prosecutor’s Office is a specialized open channel for strengthening prevention, protection and referral to specialists to investigate cases of domestic violence and all forms of violence against girls and women, who also receive speeches on a variety of topics.
