Three women who should top the list of VP Biden (Opinion)
At the age of 77, if former Vice-President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, wins the 2020 presidential election, he will be the oldest person ever elected as president, surpassing President Donald Trump who set the mark in 2016 at the age of 70. And Biden has been not committed to run for a second term if he wins in November.

Biden has made history by committing to choose a female partner. Fortunately for him, there were a number of talented and experienced women who were legitimate competitors for the place. We trust California Senator Kamala Harris, Florida Rep. Val Demings and former National Security Adviser Susan Rice should be at the top of Biden’s list.

The consensus that emerged was that Biden had to choose a woman of color. Professor Larry Sabato from the University of Virginia Crystal ball ranked fifth vice presidential choice Biden as a woman of color, with Harris, Demings, and Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth leading. USA Today, Jill Lawrence debate that Biden must choose Harris or Demings.
In general, the most important factor in choosing a running partner is how choices shape perception presidential candidate. Whether they elect a strong vice presidential candidate or not say much to voters about the type of decision making they can expect if the candidate wins office. Harris, Demings and Rice are all very accomplished and will be strong voices in opposing Trump-Pence tickets.
We agree with 538 Perry Bacon assessment that choosing black women is an important recognition of both descriptive (how similar a candidate is to voters) and symbolic representation (how a candidate exemplifies an idea that resonates with voters). Such a choice is likely to sustain positive perceptions about Biden among Democratic bases – bases that are outraged by racial riots and protests across the country. Failing to do so can reduce the number of voters among marginal voters who can prove expensive in tight contests.

Other factors that drive the process of selecting a vice president include: balancing, geography, and qualifications. Harris, Demings, and Rice can meet all of these criteria.

Counterbalancing most often functions as a means of balancing ideology with tickets – connecting moderates with more conservative or liberal candidates and vice versa. Candidates have recently paid attention to other factors such as age, race, gender and religion. The election of Biden by former president Barack Obama is one way to balance age, race, and experience.

Geography is valued in how the choice of vice president can increase ticket opportunities to win states that are important for Electoral College victory. While research suggests that couples run rarely bring the country for tickets, this is the calculus considered by all campaigns. The election of Harris, Demings or Rice can increase the number of voters in important urban areas with large African-American populations such as Charlotte, Cleveland, Detroit, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and so on.

Qualifying candidates is very important considering they are one more heartbeat from being president. Voters must have confidence that the couple who run it in accordance with their duties if there is an opportunity. Biden’s advanced age and lack of commitment about a potential second term made his choice a truly heir.

Harris, Demings and Rice all qualify to be president and can take jobs on the first day if necessary – and this is perhaps the most important reason why they should be seriously considered. All had experience at the federal level and each checked important boxes related to battles with Trump-Pence tickets.

Harris has shown himself very impressive in the confirmation hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee (especially with Attorney General Bill Barr and Chief Justice Brett Kavanaugh. He also competed for the Democratic Party 2020 presidential nomination and ran the entire state successfully for the US Attorney General and US Senator in California, a state with fifth largest economy in the world and a population of 40 million.
The less obvious pair Joe Biden must choose
Although Demings has a relatively short political career, this is very impressive. He has an important role as impeachment manager in the Trump Senate hearing and is from the important state of Florida. Demands go up through the ranks to be Head of the Orlando Police Department before being elected to the US House of Representatives. Harris and Demings’ first direct experience with the criminal justice system will be useful when addressing the potential for police reform in the field of policy which is likely to be a major problem area during 2020.

Although Rice has never held an elective position, she has a lot of high-level policy expertise after serving in the governments of Bill Clinton and Obama. His experience as a national security advisor and as ambassador to the United Nations during all of Obama’s presidency gave Rice a qualification at the highest level of domestic and international affairs.

The ability of Democrats to produce color voters in November is very important and one of the keys to Democratic victory. This is very important considering that around 9 out of 10 African-Americans generally vote for Democrats.
In particular, the number of African-American voters in 2016 declined for the first time in a generation, decreasing nationally 7 percentage points from 2012 to 2016, according to the Pew Research Center. This decrease is mainly marked in some critical swing conditions.
Based on an analysis by the Center for American Progress, The number of African-American voters fell by 19 points in Wisconsin, 10 points in Ohio and 9 points in North Carolina. While less obvious decreases were seen in Michigan, Florida and Pennsylvania, the number of white people actually increased in this regard critical state. Trump flips Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, and Pennsylvania from the Obama column to his own, winning each state with about 1 percentage point or less of the total vote. Less than 80,000 votes (from more than 13 million votes) in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin make the difference between Trump’s presidency and Hillary Clinton’s presidency. This underlines how important each sound is in this critical swing condition.

The selection of Harris, Demings or Rice will make interesting statements during this turbulent period and serve to provide a balance for Biden. Pairing a colored woman with a 77-year-old white man will not only make history, it can also stimulate participation rates among African-Americans similar to those witnessed in 2008 and 2012 – something that Democrats might need to happen to ensure victory in 2020

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
