According to a study by Credit Suisse, each of the more than 8.3 million Portuguese adults on average had an estimated wealth of more than 154 thousand euros, an increase of 8% from the previous year and puts the wealth of the Portuguese above the global average of 87.5 thousand. . euro. In 2020, the median income for a Portuguese was $52,400.
The wealth of most adult Portuguese is between ten thousand dollars and 100 thousand euros (43.8%) and between 100 thousand and one million euros (31.3%).
World wealth is growing, but more and more concentrated
Another one from conclusions of this report is that global wealth grew by 9.8 percent in 2021, but is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, as almost half of the money is in the hands of the 1 percent of the population.
According to a study by Credit Suisse, global wealth at the end of last year was 465 billion euros, 45.6% (1.7% more than in 2020) of which 1% of people owned.
In addition, wealth growth has been concentrated in just two countries: the US accounts for half of it, and China for a quarter of the pie.
The rest of the world shared a quarter of the remaining amount.
In the US, the most “super-rich”
The United States and China were the biggest contributors to global wealth growth last year, first with more than 20 billion euros and China with more than 11.3 billion euros.
The two countries were followed by Canada (another €1.9 billion), as well as India and Australia.
The United States also tops the list of countries with the largest number of adults considered super-rich (with a net worth of over €50 million): over 140,000. China reappears in second place with over 32,000 people. Portugal is far from this super-count: the Portuguese considered super-rich are “only” 106.
Overall, the number of the super-rich increased by 21%, while the number of “ordinary” millionaires (having more than a million euros) increased by 9%, including 62.5 million people.
In 2021, there are 30,000 new super-rich in the US, 5,200 more in China, 1,750 more in Germany, 1,610 more in Canada, and 1,350 more in Australia, but the exit from this group has been minor, with only the UK mentioned. (1130 people less), Turkey (minus 330) and Hong Kong (minus 130).
At the bottom of the pyramid are those who had “wealth” of less than €10,000 in 2021 and make up more than half (53%) of the world’s population.
Europe accumulates the largest share of wealth in regional terms behind the US and ahead of China, although it added only 1.7 billion in 2021, a small fraction of the 32.6 billion euros added by the two largest economic powers combined.
