The US Open cancels qualified tournaments, allowing exceptions

For now, the US Open 2020 on Winged Foot remains the rescheduled date in September, but an important part of the qualification process will be changed.

For the first time since the early days of the championship, the 120th US Open, scheduled for September 17-20, will be held without an annual qualifying tournament. Due to continuing health problems from the COVID-19 pandemic, USGA announced on Monday that all qualifying tournaments have been canceled.

The pitch, about half of which is usually made with players who have passed local and part qualifications, will only consist of exceptions. A USGA official said on Monday that they were in the process of completing the release process, which would likely be broken down into several categories. The exception is currently being finalized and will be revealed at a later date, according to USGA.

“As you can imagine, this is a very difficult decision, because qualification is the cornerstone of the USGA championship,” John Bodenhamer, senior director of championship management for USGA, said in a statement. “We are very proud of the fact that thousands of people usually come in to pursue their dreams of qualifying for the US Open and we are very sorry that they will not have that opportunity this year. But this structure provides the best way forward for us to conduct the US Open in 2020. “

USGA has scheduled 108 local qualifications in 45 states with one planned in Canada. That must be followed by 12 qualifying sections over 36 holes in late May and early June. Nine of these events will be played in the United States and three in Britain, Japan and Canada.

In early April, the USGA suspended the US Open from the original June to September in hopes that the COVID-19 crisis would subside at that time. However, it seems very likely that the tournament will be played without spectators allowed on the grounds, although a USGA official will not confirm that on Monday.

“We are not at the point where we say there will be no fans,” USGA chief brand officer Craig Annis told The Post. “We are planning a scenario where we are trying to determine the smallest number of people needed to conduct the US Open on Winged Foot. As of now, that’s around 2,000 people. After that, we hope to build fans, but that remains to be seen.

“We know this will not be typical of the US. Open with 30,000 to 40,000 people on the site. This will be significantly reduced. ‘

One advantage of the USGA is that it can witness how the PGA Tour will carry out its tournaments over the next few months. The PGA tour will resume on June 11 with the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

Annis, who said USGA officials had worked with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, said USGA could “learn” from what the PGA Tour did.

In addition to the US Open, the US Open will still be played, such as US Amateur and US Amateur US. That makes just four of the 14 USGA championships that will take place in 2020.

Method Media Bermuda will present the documentary FABRIC: Portuguese History in Bermuda on Thursday, December 29 at the Underwater Research Institute of Bermuda.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
