The US is demanding North Korea in a $ 2.5 billion sanction scheme

The Ministry of Justice has accused the North Korean and Chinese networks of secretly advancing North Korea’s nuclear weapons program by channeling at least 2.5 billion US dollars in illicit payments through hundreds of front companies.

The indictment, which was sealed Thursday in Washington federal court, is believed to be the largest criminal enforcement act ever committed against North Korea.

The 33 defendants included executives of the North Korean state-owned Foreign Trade Bank, which in 2013 were added to the Ministry of Finance’s list of sanctioned institutions for transactions that facilitated the nuclear proliferation network, and were cut off from the U.S. financial system.

According to the indictment, bank officials – one of whom served in North Korea’s main intelligence bureau – set up branches in countries around the world, including Thailand, Russia and Kuwait, and used more than 250 front companies to process US dollar payments. to further the country’s nuclear proliferation program.

The defendants used various tactics to cover their tracks, including code conversations; fake destination and customer lists on contracts and invoices; and created a new company after the bank caught an association with North Korea, the indictment said. Banks are routinely tricked into processing transactions that they don’t normally do, according to prosecutors.

Five of the defendants were Chinese citizens who operated covert branches in China or Libya. Others that are billed include individuals who sometimes serve as bank presidents or vice presidents.

“Through this indictment, the United States has signaled its commitment to hamper North Korea’s ability to illegally access the US financial system and (to limit) its ability to use the results of illicit actions to increase illegal WMD and ballistic missile programs,” acting US Attorney Michael Sherwin for the District of Columbia said in a statement.

The US has frozen and seized about $ 63 million from the scheme since 2015, according to the indictment.

This case was filed during a difficult relationship between the US and North Korea. The restoration of relations that President Donald Trump has been trying to try for the past two years has stalled, with the last face-to-face meeting between senior officials from both countries taking place in October in Stockholm.

Despite recent speculation about the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which has prompted public expressions of concern from Trump, the government has been almost completely silent about North Korea. U.S. officials said they remained eager to restart negotiations but did not get an indication from North Korea that any continuation would happen soon.

The indictment also reflects ongoing concerns about sanctions violations related to North Korea. Last month, for example, United Nations experts recommended a blacklist of 14 vessels for violating sanctions against North Korea, accusing the country in reports of increasing illegal coal exports and imports of petroleum products and continuing cyber attacks on financial institutions and crypto currency exchanges for get illegal income.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
