The New York bailiff’s union is suing the state office
The New York bailiff’s union has sued the state office that runs the court system, accusing them of failing to keep members of the corona virus safe.
Dennis Quirk, president of the New York State Court Officers Association, claimed in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Federal Court late Wednesday that the Court Administration Office did not clean the room properly or provide personal protective equipment to officers.
“As a result … union members have been, and continue to be, exposed to COVID-19 and in fact have contracted the corona virus and have died as a result of the failure,” said a civil complaint, which also called Chief Judge Janet DiFiore a defendant.
Three union members – a bailiff in Brooklyn, and two court assistants – have died from the virus while more than 100 other bailiffs have fallen ill, according to Quirk.
“It’s spread in every courthouse in the city,” Quirk said.
The union has provided face masks to members and bought hand sanitizers from the rebellious local refineries and distributed them to the courthouse, Quirk said.
The OCA does not yet provide hand sanitizers and only offers bailiffs a disposable surgical mask which they recommend to stay for a week, according to Quirk.
The old union chairman also said court officials had conspired to “silence” him with disciplinary action for months criticizing what he described as inadequate efforts to keep bailiffs safe during the pandemic.
Quirk accused the OCA of conspiring to overthrow him from his position by leaking it to The Post, a blazing e-mail in which three black court officials accused him of fostering “racial inequality and brutality” among court officers.
“They have it for me,” he said.
The Quirk suit demands compensation and a penalty of more than $ 3 million.
“There is no cleaning; no cleaning. We want our people to be safe and our public to be safe, “he said.
“This virus is a terrible thing … we have to clean the building properly and we have to have hand sanitizers inside the building – not only for officers but also for the community to stay safe too.”
OCA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
