The largest volcano in the world is under two small rocky peaks in Hawaii

Scientists at the Hawai’i University in Mānoa have proven that appearance can be deceptive.

A new study published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters stipulates that the Pūhāhonu is the largest shield volcano in the world, taking the title Mauna Loa.

Scientists surveyed the seabed and used quantitative modeling to determine that the volcano, which is about 171 miles long and 56 miles wide, is twice the size of Mauna Loa.

“Pūhāhonu is very big,” the study wrote. In such a way as to cause the earth’s crust to sink.

“Rapid crust loading causes it to subside,” Michael Garcia, lead author of the study, told CNN. “When a giant volcano is formed, a hot mantle flows away from the weight that allows the volcano to sink.”

Located about 1,000 kilometers northwest of Honolulu, the name Pūhāhonu is translated as “turtle that appears from the surface” in Hawaii. Small peaks above sea level are also known as “Gardner Pinnacles.”

The American whaling, Maro first saw the Pūhāhonu in 1820, and the crew of the Russian ship first landed on it in 1828. The volcano is now part of the Papahānaumokuākea Sea National Monument, founded in 2006.

That island House only for one species of plant, sea clan, succulent, but it is an ideal habitat for a variety of fish, corals, and insects.

A 1974 study initially regarded Pūhāhonu as the largest volcano in the Emperor-Hawaii Chain, based on limited survey data. Subsequent studies, which examined what was above and below sea level, concluded that Mauna Loa was the largest volcano. The current study updates that conclusion.

Pūhāhonu is not only the largest volcano in the world, but also the hottest. The two things are interrelated, Garcia said.

“Volume and temperature go hand in hand. Large volumes come from hot magma. It’s more likely to erupt if it’s hot,” Garcia told CNN.

Rock analysis of samples from the volcano was used to determine the temperature of the magma, and found it around 1,700 degrees Celsius (3,092 degrees Farehenheit).

“Finding the largest shield volcano on Earth in the 21st century is a surprising discovery, but then we know more about the surface of Mars than what is under the ocean on Earth,” Garcia told CNN.

“We still find things about our physical planets that we don’t know about. There is still much to be learned about planet Earth.”

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
