Maria A. Salgado Lopez, 59, from Scottsdale, Arizona, was climbing the trail on Friday and took photos with her family when she accidentally fell from the edge of the canyon, according to a National Park Service press releases.
He and his family are hiking in the west Mather Point along the South Rim of the canyon, officials said.
Guards to the Grand Canyon National Park found his body about 100 feet below the edge, according to park services.
“Investigations into the incident are being carried out by the National Park Service and the Office of Medical Examination of the Coconino District,” the park service said in a statement.
The park, which had nearly 6 million visitors last year, urged all visitors to stay on designated paths and pedestrian paths and maintain a safe distance from the edge of the rim.
The South Rim visitor’s center is located just south of Mather Point, which is one of them the most popular view of the canyon and offers a spectacular view, especially at sunset.
Last year, at least two people died after falling on the edge of the Grand Canyon. One of them, a man in his late 50s apparently took a selfie when he slipped and fell, a spokesperson for the Eagle Point observation area in Grand Canyon West told CNN at the time.
