The agenda of the 7 September holiday will be predominantly political, with actions for and against the government of Jair Bolsonaro (non-partisan) and no traditional military parade is being promoted by the army, navy and air force in several cities of the country.
This will be the second year in a row that the event has been canceled. Reason: covid-19 pandemic.
The only official ceremony to mark the anniversary of Independence will be the raising of the national flag at the Palacio da Alvorada in Brasilia, in the presence of President Bolsonaro and other authorities. There are no speeches scheduled for the ceremony and is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am. There will also be a presentation of the smoke squadron and other events.
After the ascent, Bolsonaro intends to head to the Esplanada dos Ministérios, where a demonstration of supporters will take place. Later, the president plans to travel to Sao Paulo and take part in the second act in favor of his government, which is scheduled to take place on Avenida Paulista.
“And I’m really going to participate in the Paulista event, where I have to arrive around 15:30. Then I will make a longer statement. Let’s talk to the population, and also show the world how much the government is concerned about their future. “… a popular movement, we must understand this as a normal phenomenon. Anyone who doesn’t want to support him is his right. Now that you are against a popular movement, you cannot support it, ”the president said in an interview with Rádio Jornal Pernambuco in August. 26th.
Local authorities fear that the turbulent political climate and growing institutional divisions between Bolsonaro and opponents (mainly Congress and STF) could provoke acts of violence. In Brasilia, the Esplanada dos Ministérios will have an isolation perimeter to ensure that nothing is done against the headquarters of the three powers.
According to the Federal District government, the hostile militants will be separated by a distance of approximately 3 km.
Government supporters will, for the most part, occupy the Esplanade and must go to the Praça dos Tres Poderes square. The protesters who make up the so-called Scream of the Excluded (social movements, left-wing parties and others) will concentrate in the area of the TV Tower, in the central area of Plano Piloto.
Lack of military parade
The military has instructed its officers across the country not to hold independence parades – parades that take place on public roads with the participation of military personnel, the navy and the air force. The decision was made on August 2 by a letter from the Ministry of Defense.
Two weeks later, the Armed Forces conducted a military exercise known as Operation Formosa, which resulted in a battle tank parade along the Esplanade dos Ministerios in Brasilia.
The gesture was perceived on the political stage as an attempt to intimidate and threaten the legislative and judicial authorities, as Bolsonaro considers them to be enemies.
According to Defense Ministry advisers, this will be the second time since the military dictatorship that there will be no traditional September 7 parade in the country. Last year, also due to the pandemic, a similar decision was made by the then minister, General Fernando Azevedo.
