Samsung foldable devices pave the way for a more sustainable future

The Mobile eXperience business line has made progress in its quest to do more with less through the Galaxy for the Planet initiative.

The South Korean giant has announced its progress towards its 2025 sustainability goals for its MX (Mobile eXperience) business. Key initiatives include the development and use of recycled materials in products, the development of more sustainable packaging, and the reduction of e-waste, giving new life to older Samsung Galaxy devices.

Since the announcement of the Galaxy for the Planet initiative in the August 2021 issue of Unpacked, Samsung has been working hard to create, recycle and reuse resources that would otherwise become hazardous waste, thereby minimizing its impact on the environment and using innovation to save the planet. Today, Samsung shares the progress it has made towards sustainability.

Expanding the use of recycled materials in the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4

The development of new and recycled materials is a key focus of Galaxy for the Planet. The more Samsung recycles, the more resources it saves. While reusing materials in Galaxy devices comes with many challenges, the benefits to the planet justify the effort.

Samsung designed the new Galaxy Z series and Galaxy Buds2 Pro with abandoned fishing nets that might otherwise end up in the ocean.

It all started with the integration into the Galaxy S22 series in February 2022. There are currently eleven Galaxy devices using salvaged fishing nets, including the Galaxy Book2 Pro series and the Galaxy Tab S8 series. By converting discarded fishing nets into high-performance material for Galaxy technology, Samsung is helping to minimize the impact of plastic pollution: 640,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded every year and pollute the oceans.

In this sense, the reuse of discarded fishing nets is just one example of Samsung’s efforts to increase the use of recycled materials in its products.

In addition to fishing nets, Samsung has incorporated other sustainable materials and bio-based polymers into 90% of Galaxy devices launched last year. In Galaxy Buds2 Pro, more than 90% of the product is already made from recycled materials.

This process requires sophisticated engineering and technical skills to ensure the overall quality, safety and reliability of all new materials used in Samsung’s innovative technologies. Samsung plans to invest more in research and development to obtain and convert new materials for use in Galaxy products, thereby increasing the amount of recycled materials in every device.

Changing the way Galaxy products are packaged

The company has set a goal to completely phase out single-use plastic in mobile product packaging by 2025, and the company has already reduced a significant amount of single-use plastic in its current Galaxy smartphone packaging, including new folding ones. Samsung will explore new ways to eliminate single-use plastic in packaging by evaluating every aspect of packaging design down to the smallest detail.

A journey that began with the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, but Samsung now uses 100% recycled paper in the packaging of its flagship products.

The company also reduced the packaging volume of the Galaxy Z Flip4 by 52.8% and the Galaxy Z Fold4 by 58.2%, respectively, compared to Samsung’s first-generation foldable smartphones. By reducing the packaging volume of each device, Samsung ultimately reduces the environmental impact of transporting these devices by trucks, aircraft and ships. Large scale solutions that reduce e-waste

To solve this problem, Samsung has expanded its Galaxy Upcycling program, which will breathe new life into older Galaxy smartphones. With the Galaxy Upcycling at Home program, Samsung is refurbishing smartphones with a simple software update that turns them into smart home devices that support everyday needs such as caring for children and pets.

An important part of Galaxy Upcycling is ensuring that these sustainable practices not only support the environment, but improve people’s lives. The company is also converting used Galaxy Upcycles devices into EYELIKE™ level medical diagnostic equipment that provides much-needed eye care services in low-income communities. The program has launched hundreds of Galaxy devices and provided basic eye care to more than 13,000 patients in Vietnam, Morocco, India and Papua New Guinea.
