Lisbon, 31 May (EFE) — Portugal’s hotel sector recorded around 2.4 million guests and 6 million overnight stays in April this year, up 1.6% and 1.1% respectively compared to the same month last of the year. 2019 and will exceed pre-pandemic levels for the first time.

For the first time since the emergence of the coronavirus, figures higher than in 2019 were recorded, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) emphasized in a report with preliminary data from the sector, explaining that this progress is due to an increase in the domestic market.

In particular, domestic tourists spent 1.9 million overnight stays (up 15% compared to April 2019), and foreign tourists – up to 4.1 million (-4.4% compared to the same month in 2019).

It also has the second-best month in terms of overnight stays recorded since the start of the pandemic, surpassed only by August 2021, when 7.5 million were registered, which is no more than the same month in 2019, INE said.

In relation to April 2021, the growth was 424.6% in terms of the number of guests and 548.4% in overnight stays.

According to INE, the domestic market grew by 193.6%, while the external market reached 1403.2%, which is “the highest value since the start of the pandemic.”

Among foreigners, the main outbound market was the UK (19.8% of total overnight stays), up 1.4% compared to April 2019.

This is followed by Germany (12.6% of the total and 5.1% less) and Spain (12.2% of the total and 0.9% more than in April three years ago).

The largest growth compared to April 2019 was registered in the Czech Republic (78.5%), Romania (58.6%), America (22.5%) and Ireland (18.9%) markets, while the largest decline was in the Sweden (-30.9%). ), Brazilian (-20%) and French (-15%).

In terms of nights, the hotel business (accounting for 83.1% of the total) recorded an increase of 628.9% (0.9% more than in April 2019).

On the other hand, 22.9% of hostels are closed or do not register the movements of guests.

Over the first four months of 2022, the number of overnight stays increased by 449.2% (+181% for residents and +1022.1% for non-residents) to 14.9 million people.

Compared to three years ago, they decreased by 11.9% due to the reduction of non-residents (-18.4%), while citizens registered an increase of 3.4%. EFE

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
