Portuguese re-elected as mayor of Canada for the ninth time

“Ton the eve of a different feeling due to the pandemic. The campaign was more difficult to carry out, we did not know very well what the results were because we attended fewer voters than under normal circumstances, but this was the best result I have had so far, ”Mayor Luce said. news agency.

In Sunday’s municipal elections, when 104 out of 116 polling stations were counted, the Portuguese received 7,232 votes (70.84%).

This re-election of Miranda was also supported by about a thousand Portuguese voters living in this village.

“They supported me, at least the majority. It is a great pride for me to be able to count on the support of the Portuguese community, ”he said.

Luis Miranda, 67, was born in Sao Miguel (Azores), was first elected councilor in 1987 and “mayor” of Anjou in 1997, when the city was not part of the Montreal metropolitan area. Since 2001, when the city was incorporated, he is still elected president of the municipality.

The executive branch of the municipality of Montreal will not have a majority in the municipal assembly, which, according to the mayor, is “positive”.

“We are a district in Montreal, this is an advantage for citizens (minorities). Because the presidency of the municipality must cooperate with districts such as Anjou, ”he stressed.

As for the new deadline, the Portuguese say that the main upcoming project “is the development of the metro line” in Anjou, for which the support of the municipality of Montreal will be important.

In these 2021 municipal elections, Luis Miranda decided to support Denis Coderre to the detriment of the re-elected “mayor” Valerie Planté.

“She (Plante) staked on environmental policy. This is important, but economic development must also be taken into account, ”he criticized.

This morning, Project Montreal’s leader was in the lead with more than 13 percent of the vote, with 52 percent of the vote, against Coderre with 37.5 percent of the vote.

In Canada, for almost 60 years, Luis Miranda was the first Portuguese city council president in North America.

With 46 thousand inhabitants, over a thousand are Portuguese and Portuguese descendants, Anjou is one of the largest industrial areas in Montreal.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
