Pakistan freed Indian embassy staff detained on suspicion of a hit-and-run incident

Police patrol in relation to the coronavirus pandemic in Islamabad, Pakistan in April 2020.

According to sources in Pakistan who are aware of the problem, staff members speed up, crash into injured pedestrians, and then try to escape.

A first police information report obtained by CNN stated that the two men were arrested on the grounds of “rash and rash driving.”

Sources say both are staff members of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, not diplomats. The source added that the two men had been released at the “special request of the Pakistani Foreign Ministry,” and were handed over to a senior official at the Indian High Commission because they were still under diplomatic immunity.

India was called in Pakistan’s envoy in New Delhi to protest the arrest, and the two men were released on Monday.
According to Pakistan’s Geo.tv, the men were arrested after a pedestrian was hit by a BMW at Embassy Road at around 8 Monday morning. They tried to run away, but the car was stopped by a large crowd of people, who handed the people over to the police.

After they were arrested, the police found that these people had diplomatic immunity.

Tension is increasing

The incident occurred at a time of high tension between two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Last month, India expelled two Pakistani diplomats accused of spying and carrying out “anti-Indian activities.” Islamabad condemned the move and “false and baseless accusations,” and claimed the two employees were subjected to “torture.”
The border dispute between India and China turned into an all-out media war

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said the decision to declare the two non-grata personas “was accompanied by a pre-planned and orchestrated negative media campaign, which was part of persistent anti-Pakistani propaganda.”

It said the Indian envoy was summoned and issued his own demark, condemning “India’s baseless accusations.”

The expulsion of diplomats between India and Pakistan is common, especially when tensions in the disputed Kashmir region are high, or when there are military operations or militant attacks.

In August last year, the Indian government abandoned Kashmir’s autonomy and special status, encouraged Pakistan to reduce diplomatic relations and suspend bilateral trade with India.

Both countries have had prolonged disputes over Kashmir for more than 70 years.

On Monday, Pakistan sought to frame action against High Commission officials as an attempt by the Indian side to divert attention from domestic political problems and the situation in Kashmir.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s foreign minister, on Sunday link this problem for India’s ongoing border dispute with China, accuses Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of “behaving like an expansionist country.”

“This will help the PM government and ‘environment first’ policy well to realize that India’s neighbors pose far fewer problems than their own domestic deficiencies, failures and fascism,” he wrote on Twitter.

Sophia Saifi reports from Islamabad, James Griffiths reports from Hong Kong. Adeel Raja, Vedika Sud, and Helen Regan from CNN contributed to the reporting.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
