People like us give themselves body and soul, trying to push our flag further, often with obvious personal sacrifices. Athletes who give everything they can and have to fill us with pride, overcome difficulties, beat themselves to the limit of their strength and who most of the time feel (I suppose) alone in a country that they consider their sport to be just football and the only thing, what he knows how to do is to ridicule the fact that our participation leads to several medals, and to criticize the performance, although just getting there is a real problem. But in parts.

The disaster begins with our governments getting together to go to European or world football matches, but are oblivious to other sports. It then spreads to the rest of society. There is no sports culture in Portugal. People just don’t follow them and don’t care. They are shocked only that our newspapers do not cover the achievements of our athletes, when it is just a reflection of what is consumed here in the city. We pay more attention to the pre-season training of our clubs than to the Olympic Games in which our athletes take part. We don’t worry, we don’t vibrate, we don’t even want to know. We can only criticize at the end. We are very strong in this. Does anyone know the names of our judokas, handball players, regatta players or riders? Zero. We just want results. But to achieve results, we need a lot before they fail us.

A simple look at the money invested in the Portuguese mission, in comparison, for example, with the Spanish (per capita), is enough to understand that we are failing. Most people in Portugal love sports, but this is a body-worshiping gym that can pay dividends for them on social media. We cannot constantly support those who want to devote themselves to competition, we do not attract practitioners to invest in training, and we end up seeing many in sad conditions when they have to choose other professions, since they cannot support everything that entails. an exceptional commitment to a goal that must be strategic for all of us. There is no strategy, no serious bets. We only remember that they exist when, every 4 years, these Games appear in the middle of the holidays.

Sport should be encouraged in general because of its obvious health benefits and because it must be an integral part of the culture of a country that wants to be inclusive and proud of its own. Take a look at the example of the Philippines. A country with no sporting history that decided to invest heavily in local gymnastics two years ago by hiring the best Japanese coach and has now been awarded its first medal. Here we are still waiting for a glimpse of genius or a lucky chance to get it. What are we complaining about? We can only complain about ourselves.

Method Media Bermuda will present the documentary FABRIC: Portuguese History in Bermuda on Thursday, December 29 at the Underwater Research Institute of Bermuda.

A spokesperson said: “Method Media is proud to bring Bermuda Fabric: Portugal History to Bermuda for its 5th and 6th showing at the Bermuda Underwater Observatory. Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
