North Korea blows up liaison office with South Korea

North Korean state media reported that the four-story building, located in the city of Kaesong on the North Korean side of the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, was “totally destroyed by” a huge explosion “at 2:50 pm local time.

A wisp of black smoke rose above the site visible from the side of the South Korean border shortly afterwards.

The liaison office has been closed since January 30 due to a new coronavirus pandemic, according to the South Korean Unification Ministry. South Korean staff have not been to the building since, the ministry said.

But its destruction is very symbolic, and may mark a turning point in relations between two countries that have committed to a “new era of peace” less than three years ago.

Pyongyang has issued a number of threats against Seoul in the past few days. The latest is a a statement published by North Korean state media Tuesday which said Pyongyang had begun an “intensive retaliation campaign” in response to a plan by a group of defectors to use balloons to send anti-North Korean leaflets north of the DMZ.

North Korea claimed the leaflet violated an agreement reached by Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in 2018 at their first summit, when the two leaders agreed to stop “all hostile acts and eliminate their means, including broadcasting through loudspeakers and distribution. leaflets. “Along the border with them. It is illegal for most North Koreans to consume information that is not approved by the country’s powerful propaganda machine, and that can have dire consequences.

The liaison office was reopened and renewed as part of the agreement to help the two Koreans communicate, but the future was thrown into doubt last week when North Korea announced it would cut off all communications with South Korea, including hot telephone lines intended to directly connect leaders the two countries, in response to the leaflet.

“Recent brave foolish actions undermine the dignity of our highest leadership,” the statement published in KCNA Tuesday read.

“The world will clearly see what severe punishment our people will impose on the South Korean authorities and how they will remove human waste from the earth.”

Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister and perhaps the second most powerful person in the country, demanded the South Korean government punish the defectors, whom he called “traitors,” “human trash” and “trash” who dared to hurt the absolute . the prestige of our Supreme Leader represents our country and its extraordinary dignity, “according to a statement brought by North Korea’s KCNA news agency on Saturday.

Kim also hinted in the statement that North Korea’s liaison office would be destroyed in several ways.

“Before long, the tragic view of a useless North-South joint liaison office that will completely collapse will be seen,” he said according to a statement on Saturday.

It was not clear if there was anyone inside the building, as Pyongyang said last week that it had completely cut off communications with South Korea.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
