New app revolutionizes the way to learn Portuguese here and around the world - Android

GOGENIUS is a mobile app for assisted learning in European Portuguese developed by Sandra Figueiredo, Associate Professor of Psychology at the Autonomous University of Lisbon (CIP-UAL) with support from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Its target audience is mainly immigrants who have recently arrived in Portugal and can also be used by 1st cycle students and Portuguese expats who do not want to lose touch with their mother tongue, in addition to all foreigners interested in learning European Portuguese easily … …

The new application has several navigation mechanisms designed to make the learning process more efficient, as well as to use an interactive exercise system that includes various topics.

For Sandra Figueiredo, its creator, it stands out for its pedagogical completeness, research experience and, above all, for the fact that it speaks European Portuguese, as opposed to Brazilian Portuguese commonly used in other existing applications of the genre. on the market.

The method used is based on the presentation of various learning games and tasks so that users can progress in learning. Reading, writing and phonetics exercises are fully supported by study guides available in 10 different languages.

“I absolutely believe that if we hear information while teaching in our native language, contact with the target language – in this case Portuguese – will be much faster and easier,” Sandra Figueiredo said in statements to SAPO TEK. “Compassion is critical in language learning, and GOGENIUS has that ingredient.”

All games and tasks are presented in two languages after choosing a language in the menu. Users will have immediate access to the ratings obtained in each game so that they can follow the development of their skill levels and personalized monitoring to optimize their knowledge.

There are 14 games in total: from reading, writing to listening. Everyday aspects such as “what to eat” or “what to wear” are also part of the content of the application.

“Remar a caravela” (mobile) for teaching European Portuguese

The idea for GOGENIUS originated in 2016, inspired by some of the contents of a CD previously developed with UAveiro and FCT, “but with a different dynamic and a different audience.” Sandra Figueiredo says that after some market research “and a great deal of resistance to the initial“ no ”external funding,” she realized that it was through persistence, character and patience (about five years) that a “good port” could be arrived at. ‘”.

In the end, it took six months to develop the app, “but it would have been much longer if it hadn’t had a fantastic team of programmers like DICA Systems” and support for FCT and UAL, said the creator, who says she is “jaded but happy to “start a” long haul flight “after everything has been sorted out in such a short time.

The next step will be to overcome the difficulties inherent in the vast mobile universe: the application must reach the general public and cover, say, half of the world of users.

GOGENIUS is available for Android devices. from Play Store and for PCs with Android emulators, a one-time companion fee of € 4.89.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
