Nearly half of US COVID-19 deaths are related to nursing homes
Nearly half of the 124,000 people who die from coronaviruses in the US work or live in nursing homes, according to new death counts in 12,000 facilities that show infected people in nursing homes are dying three times the general population level.
While 11 percent of those killed by the virus actually died in nursing homes or long-term care centers, they were associated with more deaths – more than 54,000 total deaths, or 43 percent of national casualties when calculating workers and others who were infected viruses in the facility, according to the New York Times database statistics from facilities, and local, state and federal governments.
In at least 24 states, most deaths are related to home care. New Hampshire accounts for the largest percentage of deaths in nursing homes COVID-19, with 80 percent, or 293, of the state deaths coming from the facility. Rhode Island and Minnesota followed, with 77 percent each.
The data also shows a mortality rate of 17 percent among infected nursing home patients, compared to five percent nationally.
Death rates for COVID positive people in New York nursing homes are not available, because the state does not need the facility to report the number of positive cases, according to the Times.
New York has recorded 6,250 deaths in nursing homes related to COVID, a number that has been widely speculated among the bipartisan coalition of MPs.
“I don’t know if we have a complete and correct calculation of how many people died from COVID-19 in nursing homes and how many nursing home residents who were moved to hospitals died because of COVID,” Chairman of the State Senate Finance Committee Liz Krueger (D – Manhattan) to The Post this week.
Governor Andrew Cuomo’s policy which prohibits nursing homes from refusing to accept coronavirus patients after they were discharged from the hospital is being seen as a source of steep death rates.
The White House is one of the governor’s strongest criticisms.
“Governor Cuomo alone is to blame for refusing to close New York and forcing seniors who tested positive for Coronavirus to return to his state’s nursing home,” Hogan Gidley, deputy assistant and deputy press secretary for President Trump, said in a statement earlier this week.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
