Each map is a huge resource for astronomers, but when viewed sequentially, it serves as an even more important resource for trying to better understand the universe. Map comparisons can reveal distant objects that have changed position or brightness over time, known as time-domain astronomy.

If you go outside and look at the night sky, it may seem that nothing is changing, but it is not. Stars flare and explode. Asteroids pass us and shimmer. Black holes tear stars apart. The universe is a really busy and active place.

NEOWISE was originally a data processing project to obtain data on detected asteroids and their characteristics from WISE, an observatory launched in 2009 that was tasked with analyzing the entire sky to search for and study objects outside our solar system.

The spacecraft used cryogenically cooled detectors, making them sensitive to infrared light.

Mission WISE, dying, refuses to die

Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, is emitted by many objects in space, including cool nearby stars and some of the brightest galaxies in the universe.

Mission WISE ended in 2011 after running out of onboard coolant needed for some infrared observations., but the spacecraft and some of its infrared detectors were still operational. Therefore, in 2013, NASA redirected it to track asteroids and other near-Earth objects. Both the mission and the spacecraft were given a new name: NEOWISE.

Despite the changes, the infrared telescope continues to scan the sky every six months, and astronomers continue to use the data to study objects outside our solar system.

Researchers use the catalog to study brown dwarfs, a collection of objects found across the galaxy that lurk in the darkness near our sun. Although they form like stars, brown dwarfs do not accumulate enough mass to initiate nuclear fusion, the process that makes stars shine.

Because of their proximity to Earth, nearby brown dwarfs move faster across the sky than more distant stars, which move at the same speed. So one way to identify brown dwarfs among the billions of objects in the catalog is to look for moving objects. A CatWISE spin-off project called Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 invites citizen scientists to examine the NEOWISE data for moving objects that may have been missed by computer searches.

NASA WISE "discovered" 200 brown dwarfs

With two original WISE full sky maps, Scientists have found about 200 brown dwarfs within 65 light-years of our Sun.. Additional maps revealed 60 more and doubled the number of known Y dwarfs, the coldest type of brown dwarf. Compared to warmer brown dwarfs, Y dwarfs may have a weirder history in terms of how they formed and when they formed.

Watching the sky change over more than a decade has also contributed to the study of how stars form. NEOWISE can peer into the dusty mantles surrounding protostars, or into balls of hot gas en route to becoming stars. Over the years, protostars twinkle and flare, accumulating mass from the dust clouds that surround them. Scientists are monitoring nearly 1,000 protostars long-term with NEOWISE to gain insight into the early stages of star formation.
