Brooks Brothers, a 200-year-old men’s clothing retailer who has dressed 40 US presidents and has unofficially become a Wall Street retailer selling bankers, has filed for bankruptcy.

The privately-run company struggled as its business attire became more casual in recent years. But it has been destroyed by the coronavirus pandemic, which sent requests for falling suits. Many employees who work from home choose to choose t-shirts and sweatpants that are far more casual than striped suits and special shirts.

Brooks Brothers filed Chapter 11 Wednesday morning in the Delaware court. The company warned in June that it would lay off nearly 700 workers in three states and find buyers because the coronavirus destroyed its business.

The company has evaluated various strategic options, including potential sales. But has struggled to find a buyer.

Retailers are reportedly in the process of closing 20% of 250 stores in the US. According to the bankruptcy filing, Brooks Brothers has received $ 75 million in financing to continue operating.

Company background: Brooks Brothers opened its first store in 1818 near Wall Street. Years later, it began making apparel for men who couldn’t wait for a tailor. In 1896, retailers discovered the original button-down polo shirt and had offered many other first-type clothing, including prints of madras and chunky shetland sweaters.

Claudio Del Vecchio, owner of Brooks Brothers, bought the brand in 2001 from Marks and Spencer for $ 225 million. He helped expand the appeal of brands beyond men, including women’s clothing, children’s clothing and household goods. He told the New York Times last month that his factories in America “never made money” and planned to move several operations abroad to save money.

Some more context: Brooks Brothers is the latest iconic retailer to go bankrupt. J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney have all filed in the past few months, some citing slumping sales of the virus.

The pandemic hit Brooks Brothers hard because some workers were forced to work from home, eliminating the need for new clothes and better clothes.

GlobalData Retail said in a note Wednesday that male-year formal wear sales fell by 74% between April and June.

“While this setback will decrease over time, demand will remain suppressed for the remainder of 2020 and until 2021 because office work, business meetings and outreach are all reduced,” writes Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. “This makes Brooks Brothers highly exposed to depressed markets.”

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
