Mike Pence, Pelosi clashed in implementing the mandate of face masks

Mike Pence, Pelosi clashed in implementing the mandate of face masks

Vice President Mike Pence said on Sunday that the Trump administration handed it over to the state to decide whether face masks were mandatory to protect against the corona virus – while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the national mandate on face covering was “long overdue.”

Asked about the surge in coronavirus cases in the south – and after Texas Governor Greg Abbott begged residents to wear masks amid the surge in cases there – Pence said each state was in “a unique situation.”

“One element of American genius is the principle of federalism, state and local control. We have explained that we want to submit to the governor. We want to submit to local officials, “Pence said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

But host John Dickerson said the coronavirus, which has killed more than 127,000 Americans, “did not know federalism,” and questioned why there was no coordinated national response.

“If we had taken that approach, we would never have the success we had in the greater New York City area. We would never have succeeded in Michigan or New Orleans, because from the start, we worked together in partnership with the governor to ensure that they have what they need when they need it, tailored to the unique circumstances in their state, “Pence said.

Meanwhile, Pelosi, in an interview on ABC News’ “This week,” notes that the US has 4 percent of the world’s population but represents 25 percent of cases worldwide.

“It’s life and death. … We don’t have a vaccine, and we don’t have the cure. God willing and enabling science, we will be here soon, “he said, adding there were tools to fight the spread.

Asked whether wearing a mask should be mandated throughout the country, the California Democrat said, “Oh, it must have been long overdue for that.”

“And my understanding is that the Centers for Disease Control has recommended the use of masks, but not to sue because they do not want to offend the president,” Pelosi said.

“And the president must be an example. You know, real men wear masks. Be an example for the country and wear a mask. This is not about protecting yourself. It’s about protecting other people and their families. “

Florida has more than 141,000 COVID-19 cases and has recorded record high figures over the past few days – including 9,585 on Saturday and 8,530 on Sunday.

Texas reports a daily record of 5,996 cases on Thursday, with 5,707 on Friday and 5,747 on Saturday.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
