LAX will try a thermal camera to see tourists with COVID-19

Hoping to make flying safer, Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday will begin testing thermal cameras to identify passengers with high body temperatures as a way to slow the spread of the corona virus.

Three cameras will scan the flow of passengers arriving and departing from Tom Bradley International Terminal in hopes of seeing passengers with temperatures of 100.4 degrees or higher – a common symptom in the COVID-19 pandemic that has pushed air travel demand down to the lowest level in decades.

“Our ability to recognize people who exhibit COVID[-19] “Symptoms, as we saw at the beginning of this pandemic, are very important to stop its spread and ensure people can travel safely,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a terminal press conference.

Temperature testing is not a silver bullet: Health experts say people can spread the virus while showing little or no symptoms. It should not be the only temperature check. Other health protocols added at the airport include requirements used by tourists who wear masks and maintain physical distance from each other whenever possible, and LAX has installed 250 hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the terminal.

Airports around the world have switched to technology to help slow the spread of the virus. In addition to thermal cameras, airports are testing sanitation stands, autonomous cleaning robots and other gadgets in the hope of making air travel safer while reducing the risk of exposing airport staff to this disease.

LAX, one of the busiest airports in the world, plans to operate cameras for 12 weeks to test the effectiveness of technology and evaluate staff procedures before deciding whether to expand camera use to other terminals. Unlike contactless hand-held thermometers, thermal cameras can measure the temperature of several people simultaneously, even when people are moving.

Under the LAX program, passengers heading for departing flights that have temperatures of 100.4 degrees or higher will be pulled aside and again tested by a medical technician or assistant with a handheld thermometer; if a second inspection confirms high temperatures, they will be advised not to travel – but are not prevented from traveling. International passengers arriving identified as having high temperatures will be directed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff for quarantine.

LAX paid for medical professionals from a reserve fund not exceeding $ 150,000 during the pilot program, with plans to request reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to LAX officials. LAX is not charged by developers and camera operators for the use of technology during the testing period.

The screening of passengers leaving LAX is voluntary, and travelers can avoid cameras by carrying one of several entrances to the terminal. The CDC, however, requires temperature checks for passengers arriving from certain countries, such as China and Iran.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
