Honorary Consul of Portugal identifies Rendeiro's body in Pinetown mortuary – Observer

Portugal’s honorary consul in Durban, Elias de Souza, left the Pinetown mortuary just before noon (11:00 am in Portugal) this Saturday, confirming that the body of former banker Joao Rendeiro was there.

With a laconic “I confirm” during brief statements to reporters, Elias de Souza and his wife left the place with an angry face and no further statements.

Joao Rendeiro’s body arrived at the morgue at noon on Friday, and the autopsy can only take place from Monday, when work resumes after the weekend, a source in the South African forensic service said.

On Friday, the body was identified by the honorary consul, and this Saturday, the documents related to the case were processed.

According to the same source, the results of the autopsy should go through the investigation team.

The forensics facilities are next to an industrial and commercial area that is abandoned because it’s Saturday.

Pinetown is a suburb of Durban whose mortuary is closest to Westville Prison, where Joao Rendeiro was held, about 10 kilometers away.

In addition to the one who handles this case, the death of Joao Rendeiro passes by those present from South Africa.

Unlike what happens in Portugal, this topic is out of the media’s eye: there are several articles on the Internet portals about the “fugitive Portuguese banker who died in prison”, but he is not on the cover of the morning newsstands in Durban.

Former BPP President Joao Rendeiro, who has been detained in South Africa since December 11, 2021 after evading Portuguese justice for three months to avoid serving his sentence in Portugal, died on Thursday evening in a Westville prison.

Lawyer for the former banker June Marks said Rendeiro was found dead in his cell on the eve of the preparatory hearing on the extradition case to Portugal, scheduled for June 13-30. South African authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death.

Joao Rendeiro was convicted in three separate cases related to the collapse of BPP, and the court found that he withdrew 13.61 million euros from the bank.

The collapse of BPP in 2010 affected thousands of customers and cost hundreds of millions of euros to the state.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
