Euronews guarantees its editorial independence after the Hungarian-linked Portuguese venture capital Alpac Capital bought 88% of the capital of the European TV channel. This share was previously owned by the Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris.

“I have every guarantee of editorial independence,” said Euronews CEO Michael Peters. to the European digital newspaper Politiko, based in Brussels. The independent edition of the company will now include three people chosen by the new owner.

Euronews has a presence in 440 million homes in 160 countries, calling itself “Europe’s leading news channel.” It reaches 145 million people monthly, which is 68% of all households in Europe.

For its part, Alpac Capital said there was no cause for concern about the “editorial freedom” of the French news channel in Lyon. “We decided to invest in Euronews because we believe in its enormous potential and consider it an underestimated asset,” an official representative of the fund told Politiko.

Alpac Capital is controlled by Pedro Vargas David (son of former SDP MEP Mario David, who is now political adviser to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban) and Luis Santos (son of national voter Fernando Santos).

“We want to be firmly established in Brussels, like NBC or CNN in Washington,” Pedro Vargas David recently told Expresso.

The foundation is headquartered in Lisbon, but has offices in the capital of Hungary, Budapest, as well as in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

According to Politiko, Alpac has already received capital from large Hungarian companies, and the country’s foreign minister helped launch the Alpac fund for regional investments in 2017.

Alpac also received funding from the Hungarian international agency EXIM, as well as from MOL energy and OTP Bank. The three companies declined to invest in Euronews, but Politico underlines that all three have already contributed to the Alpac East-West Fund, which aims to invest in small and medium-sized companies with growth potential in Portugal, Hungary and other countries. neighboring countries.

Another of the links highlighted by the newspaper is related to the Hungarian tech company 4iG, which maintains relations with Viktor Orban’s party, Fidesz, according to the Brussels-based digital newspaper. Pedro Vargas David is on the board of directors of this company, whose revenue in 2020 came from contracts with the Hungarian state.

“Politiko” recalls “Express” article since 2018, when Mario David claimed that he had befriended Viktor Orban 26 years ago (at the time) and that his consultations were carried out “on a voluntary basis”.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
