Ecoboo: "A real Maldives experience"… in Portuguese - Hugo Pedrosa, Director

Ecoboo is a new boutique hotel with Portuguese capital in the Maldives, focused on sustainability since its construction and committed to guaranteeing a “real Maldivian experience,” general manager Hugo Pedrosa told PressTUR.

The name of the hotel comes from a combination of two words: “ecological” (compliance with environmental principles) and “bamboo” (in English “bamboo”), the material that was most often used in its construction.

“In the construction of the hotel, we used about 35 kilometers of bamboo,” Hugo Pedrosa told PressTUR at an event in Lisbon organized by tour operator Sonhando for travel agents (click to read: Dreaming offers the idyllic Maldives “as they always imagined” but with a “special” touch.).

Ecoboo, which opened in late July, has 26 rooms and is located on a local island, Thinadhoo, home to about 40 people, “90 minutes by speedboat or 25 minutes by seaplane” from Male Airport.

“The whole project is sustainable, from planning to day-to-day,” Hugo Pedrosa guarantees, pointing out that the hotel desalinates and filters seawater, collects rainwater, uses wastewater for irrigation, and recycles organic waste through an accelerated composting process that allows you to get fertilizer for the garden in 24-48 hours.

The hotel also has solar panels that enable it to reach a self-sustaining level of “about 70-80%” and inorganic waste shredding equipment it provides to the local community, allowing it to reduce the size of waste for transport and recycling.

In addition to bamboo, coconut fiber is another of the most commonly used materials in Ecoboo, namely in bed mattresses.

One of the hotel’s missions is to provide “a real Maldives experience,” its CEO emphasized. To that end, Ecoboo offers a seven-day program with daily experiences including visits to uninhabited islands and sandbars, swimming with sharks, dolphin watching, snorkeling and fishing.

“The experience package is ready on a turnkey basis,” Hugo Pedrosa summed up, specifying that it includes accommodation on a full board basis, daily activities and transfers to and from the airport.

Since it is on an island with residents and the Maldives is a Muslim country, the hotel is not allowed to sell alcoholic beverages. However, from “February or March,” Ecoboo will have a ship off the island that will be a floating bar-restaurant where customers can arrive in about five minutes by boat and will be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
