With the end of their official season, the Knicks returned to the market to become head coaches and have 11 candidates known to be ready for an interview. There is a wide variety of experiences, backgrounds and connections to the organization, with president Leon Rose looking for someone who can take the Knicks “from development to become an eternal winner.”

Bio: Northport’s pride, Long Island, won its first NBA coaching head with the Nets in 2016 and saw them through their toughest years before awarding a surprise trip to the playoffs in 2019. His work was named by Kevin Durant as the reason he signed a contract with the Nets last season, but Atkinson never got the chance to train him after being fired in March. The 53-year-old man felt his voice was no longer heard and reportedly failed to connect with Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Known as: Player development is a gymnastic mouse calling card with competitive fire.

Knicks Connection: As well as being a client of the Creative Artist Body – whose basketball division is led by Rose – Atkinson is the Knicks assistant from 2008-12.

Mike Brown

Bio: Brown spent five years as LeBron head coach James and Cavaliers, setting a record 305-187 and going to the playoffs every year. They were Eastern Conference champions in 2007 but were swept away by Spurs in the NBA Finals. He was named the 2009 NBA Coach, but was fired in 2010 after leaving the initial playoffs. Brown was hired as Lakers head coach in 2011, and they made a playoff in his first season, but he got five matches in his second season. The 50-year-old was then re-employed by the Cavs for one season in 2013. Since 2016, Brown has been a Warriors staff member, sometimes filling in for Steve Kerr during his back injury.

Bio: Over the past six years, Delany has been an assistant to coaching staff Steve Clifford – with the Hornets from 2014-18 and Magic for the past two years. He also handled the head coach’s assignment for the Magic summer league team in 2019. The Saint Anselm College 2002 graduate began his NBA career as a video apprentice for the Celtics before spending 11 years in the Heat organization as a video intern, video coordinator and talent scout. Also has head training experience from the season with the G-League Heat affiliate, Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Knicks Connection: Has been a coach under Clifford, a former Knicks assistant, and was reportedly considered to be a Fizdale staff member in 2018.

Bio: Atkinson’s colleague teammate in Richmond, Fleming became the top assistant coach for the Bulls in 2019 after spending three years as an assistant for Atkinson and the Nets. New Jersey products were played professionally in Germany before becoming a coach there. The 50-year-old returned to the United States in 2014 and worked as a Spurs staff member in the NBA summer league (with Will Hardy, for head coach Ime Udoka) before joining the Nuggets staff as an assistant for the 2015-16 season.

Known as: Offensive mind which is a strong communicator and teacher.

Bio: The youngest member of this list, 32-year-old Hardy is seen as the successor to Gregg Popovich with Spurs. He has been an assistant coach of Popovich since 2016 and has worked in the organization for 10 years, starting as an internship in basketball operations and moving forward. Hardy served as the team’s summer league coach from 2015-18 and was also the video coordinator of Team USA for the 2019 FIBA ​​World Cup.

Bio: After playing point guard for 19 seasons in the Hall of Fame career, Kidd was immediately appointed as head coach of the Nets in 2013. They went 44-38 that season and defeated the Raptors in the first round of the playoffs before being eliminated. Kidd then tried to seize more power in the front office, but a failed coup backfired, which caused him to be traded to Milwaukee for two second-round choices. The 47-year-old helped reverse the Bucks, with a pair of playoff appearances before being sacked in 2018. Last summer, Kidd joined the Lakers as assistant coach.

Bio: Prior to the 2019-20 season, Miller was a college coach who had been a G-League assistant with Spurs then taking over as head coach of the Westchester Knicks in 2015. The 2017-18 G-League of the Year coach joined Fizdale’s Staff as assistant in the year 2019, only to be in the spotlight in December when he was appointed as interim coach over Fizdale’s dismissal. Miller, 55, led the Knicks to a record 17-27 before COVID-19 suspended the season.

Bio: Mosley is in his fifth season as assistant coach for the Mavericks and in his second year as the team’s defense coordinator. The 41-year-old has also coached the Mavs summer league team for the past three years. Before joining the Dallas staff, Mosley spent four years as Cavaliers assistant coaches and five years with the Nuggets – three as assistant coach / player development and two worked on player development and scouting.

Known as: Player development, defensive minded and strong communicator.

Bio: Considered a pioneer for the Knicks work, Thibodeau was previously the head coach of the Bulls and Timberwolves. The 62-year-old was the NBA Coach of the Year in 2011, his first season with the Bulls, when he led them to a 62-20 record and a trip to the Eastern Conference finals. He took the Bulls to the playoffs for five years, but was sacked in 2015 after reporting tensions with the front office. He was hired as head coach and president of the Timberwolves in 2016 and made a playoff in 2018 before being sacked in 2019, reportedly for being too harsh on young players.

Known as: Thibodeau had built his resume on his tireless work ethic and defense scheme, which he later recognized as an assistant.

Ime Udoka

Bio: Another member of the Popovich coaching tree, after playing three seasons for the Spurs head coach then began his coaching career there. After retiring in 2012, he became assistant coach for Spurs – spending seven years there, including two as the organization’s summer league coach. In 2019, the 42-year-old player went to become assistant leader of the 76ers after conducting interviews for the Cavaliers’ work.

Known as: Development of players and forming strong relationships with players.

Knicks Connection: Played eight games for the Knicks in 2006.

Bio: The last coach who led the Knicks to the playoffs, Woodson returned to interview seven years – and three coaches, plus two temporary – then, after also interviewing in 2018. The 62-year-old coach led the Knicks for two seasons from 2012-14 (in addition to assignments as caretaker coach), set a 109-79 record and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2013. But a slow start the following season eventually led to the Woodson shooting. Previously spent six years as head coach of the Hawks, being 206-286 with three playoff appearances.
