The US city in Houston could be the most severe in the whole country if the current trajectory in the Covid-19 case continues as it did, a health expert warned.

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National Faculty of Tropical Medicine, said that new infection rates also increased in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, and that the number of cases could rival those in Brazil.

“Large metro areas seem to be rising very fast and some models are almost apocalyptic,” Hotez told CNN Anderson Cooper.

Hotez, who is also a professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, is working on a potential Covid-19 vaccine.

He said the model showed that Houston could have a fourfold increase in the number of daily cases on July 4.

“It was really worrisome and as the numbers increased, we saw an equal increase in the number of hospitalizations and admissions for ICU and you were worried, you got to the point where you flooded the ICU and that’s when deaths increased,” he said.

Houston does have a hospital bed capacity now, but Hotez said he was worried about the future. “We have more space, but who wants to go there?”

Something was needed to stop the transmission of the community, he said.

On Thursday, Texas announced 5,551 new Covid-19 cases – the highest one-day increase in the state. Florida and California also reported their biggest one-day increase in cases.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned residents on Tuesday that because the spread of the new corona virus is so rampant it is now the safest place for residents to be at home. He did not issue official orders to stay at home.

Reopening can contribute: Hotez said the country was aggressive by distancing itself socially at the start of the pandemic, which made the number of cases go down, but the country reopened in late April and right after Commemoration Day the number of cases began to increase. Hotez said the country did not place an “adequate level” of public health infrastructure.

Portuguese historical films will premiere on 29 December.

Method Media Bermuda will present the documentary FABRIC: Portuguese History in Bermuda on Thursday, December 29 at the Underwater Research Institute of Bermuda.

A spokesperson said: “Method Media is proud to bring Bermuda Fabric: Portugal History to Bermuda for its 5th and 6th showing at the Bermuda Underwater Observatory. In November and December 2019, Cloth: A Portuguese Story in Bermuda had four sold-out screenings. Now that Bermuda has reopened after the pandemic, it’s time to bring the film back for at least two screenings.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts.
