Coronavirus cases stabilize in China while Italy has decreased mortality

China has extended COVID-19 tests to newly re-opened salons amid a decline in cases, while South Korea continues to face new infections after it has relaxed the rules of social distance to lift the economy.

In the U.S., Vice President Mike Pence canceled a planned bus tour in Florida after a surge in confirmed cases there. Meanwhile, Italy, which was hit hard, recorded the lowest COVID-19 daily mortality count in nearly three months.

No positive cases were found in Beijing’s beauty and barbershop in further signs that the recent city outbreak has been largely controlled.

Beijing officials have temporarily closed the large wholesale food market where the virus is widespread, closing schools and locking up several neighborhoods. Anyone who leaves Beijing must have a negative virus test result within the previous seven days.

Tens of millions of Chinese traveled during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival which ended Saturday, with no immediate outbreak reported.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 40 of the newly reported cases were infected domestically, while 22 others came from abroad. Most local cases were detected in the densely populated metropolitan area of Seoul, related to nightclubs, church services, large e-commerce warehouses and low-income workers.

In Hawaii, the city of Honolulu announced that the camp would reopen for the first time in three months with limited permission to ensure social distance. Instead, Washington Governor Jay Inslee postponed plans to move the district to the fourth phase of the reopening plan because cases continued to increase.

In a further sign of the impact on the US economy, Tyson Foods has announced that 371 employees at its chicken processing plant in the southwest corner of Missouri have tested positive for COVID-19.

Pence canceled a planned bus tour in Florida to benefit his re-election and President Donald Trump, because state health officials on Saturday reported more than 9,500 new cases, surpassing the number of the previous day with more than 600 confirmed cases. The figures appear when officials move to close the beach and prevent meetings at the bar.

Kansas, Idaho, and Oklahoma were also among the US states that witnessed a sharp increase in this case.

While the increase partially reflects expanded testing, experts say there is ample evidence that the scourge is returning, including increased deaths and hospitalizations in some parts of the country and a higher percentage of virus tests that return positive.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
