Brazilian volunteers to teach Portuguese in the US

2021 will go down in history as a period when more and more Brazilians came closer to realizing the so-called “American Dream”. According to a report prepared by the law firm AG Immigration in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, 12,281 citizens received American naturalization, up 47.5% from the previous year, when there were 8,323 people.

Also according to the data, Brazil ranked 15th among the countries that most requested US citizenship, behind countries such as Mexico, India, the Philippines, Cuba and China, which occupied the first positions. In addition, Brazil ranked eighth in the list of countries that received the most green cards over the past year: 17,952 Brazilians received a document giving them the right to live and work there permanently. Compared to 2020, when 16,746 documents were issued, this number represents an increase of 7.2%.

Faced with these signs, there is a growing number of Brazilians having children away from their homeland and therefore little exposure to the country’s language and culture. At the same time, these children and adolescents do not fully speak English.

In this case, a Brazilian proofreader and translator has recently started to develop volunteer work with these families. Lindaura Moreira found that teaching Portuguese is still a rarity for Americans, Brazilian children or not.

“I give voluntary lessons to the children of Brazilians who are naturalized American citizens, an activity aimed at improving the daily lives of these people, empowering them in the United States. They were born here, they know the language, they communicate very well, but they are illiterate,” says Moreira.

She says that working as a proofreader and translator in Brazil helps her teach Portuguese to foreigners, including on a voluntary basis. Although these are different activities, they [tradução e ensino] ends with weaving. Translation work forces me to expand my vocabulary, and this enriches my vocabulary, which is the set of words that people of a given language have at their disposal for oral or written self-expression,” explains.

Considering that the United States is one of Brazil’s main trading partners, ranking second in the ranking of Brazilian exports, the expert concludes, “these good trade relations between countries make English proficiency even more beneficial and also affect the interests of foreigners in learning our language. “.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
