Bayern Munich remain on the historic treble track with the German Cup victory over Bayer Leverkusen
However, Leverkusen responded well early in the second half and had a golden opportunity to halve the deficit through substitute Kevin Volland.
Moussa Diaby showed a blistering pace to get past Alphonso Davies – widely regarded as the fastest player in German football – and put the ball on a plate for Volland, who was completely wrong in his efforts and missed a full shot.
That will prove to be a decisive moment in the final, because Bayern immediately go up to the other end and put the game without a doubt after a moment of nightmare for Luke Hradecky to see Leverkusen goalkeeper netted Robert Lewandowski’s shot into his own net.
That will go down as the Polish striker’s goal – certainly not the prettiest – and his total count in this record-breaking season to 50.
Leverkusen finally got a goal through Sven Bender, but that was little more than consolation, because Lewandowski won his second goal in the match – and his 51st in only 43 matches this season – to make it 4-1 with less than a minute to play.
There is still time for the assistant video referee to get involved and add some additional drama after Davies is considered to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Kai Havertz, one of the most interesting talents in world football, advanced to the penalty spot and smashed the ball into the top corner.
Havertz kicked the grass in frustration, knowing the goal was futile and, almost like a cruel joke, referee Tobias Welz blew the whistle for full time immediately after the ball lodged in the back of the goal.
Football has continued without fans for several weeks since the return of the sport to the rest of Europe following the locking of the coronavirus, but the absence of voices from the team’s supporters made events like this seem rather hollow.
When the Bayern players lifted the trophy, their cries and shouts of excitement clearly echoed around the empty stands of the Berlin Olympiastadion.
Stadiums without supporters have been described by many as a ‘new normal’, but the lack of atmosphere will not be something players want to get used to. Some matches, such as domestic long-distance social cup finals in Hungary and Denmark, offer hope that fans can return in the near future.
With the Bundesliga title wrapped up, Bayern are now two-thirds of the way to finish just the second treble in club history.
Next to the eternal German champions is the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Chelsea, with Bayern holding a 3-0 lead that seems insurmountable after the first match in London on 25 February.
Bayern will now be one of the favorites to secure the Champions League title when the competition continues in a format that was changed next month. The rest of the match will be completed in August and will take place during the one leg match in Lisbon, Portugal.
However, for now, Bayern will celebrate its continued dominance of German football and fifth domestic doubles in the last 10 seasons.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.
Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.
According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”
In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.
The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.
In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.
From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.
“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
