Anti-science content is growing rapidly on Facebook nowadays

The news about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the US has been quite sad this week, there are no two ways about it and it seems to make the country face a difficult July. On Wednesday, for example, the US beyond 50,000 coronavirus infections every day for the first time since the pandemic began. Countries like Florida and Nevada continues to record new cases reported and high rates of transmission and, since the start of the pandemic, the US has now reported more than 2.7 million confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus, as well as more than 128,000 deaths, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.

Actor Tom Hanks (who contracted and quickly recovered from coronavirus a few months ago) took some time in the middle of promoting his new WWII era film for Apple TV + to talk a little about coronavirus and specifically to urge people Wear a face mask to protect themselves and everyone around them. He decided to offer it as a kind of PSA because of the prevalence of so many anti-science postures and anti-face masks – a lot happening in predictable environments.

Result of a new analysis from Media Matters shows that anti-face mask content is currently developing on Facebook, with a post about facial masking from a Facebook page that is “leaning right” gathering more than 5.5 million interactions over the past month. In addition, according to media groups, “posts that promote skepticism about the efficacy of facial coverings, despite experts” recommendation, get the most interactions. “

Media Matters conducted this analysis by looking at more than 2,000 Facebook posts about masks from right-wing Facebook pages between May 30 and June 30 “to understand the narratives that are spreading in the right-wing Facebook ecosystem.” Nearly 5.5 million interactions found include things like sharing, reactions, and comments on social networks and the group found that these posts received around 2,700 interactions per post.

Even at this stage of the coronavirus pandemic, there are still political advantages to the practice of wearing face masks or not. Security, for example, interviewing a bar owner in eastern Texas – Tee Allen Parker, owner of Machine Shed Bar & Grill in Kilgore – who has banned masks in his bar.

“We don’t live in a communist country!” he says. ‘This should be America. That’s an individual choice. There is nothing scientific that says the mask was effective. I chose not to use it, but I didn’t let thousands of people breathe at me. “

On Wednesday Meanwhile, Texas reached the highest daily number of new corona virus cases since the beginning of this pandemic.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
