Active duty forces will only be deployed as 'final choice'

Attorney General William Barr said there was broad agreement in the Trump administration that active duty troops should only be used in American cities to control national protests as a “last resort.”

“The decision was made to be ready and ready around a number of regular troops. But everyone agrees that the use of regular troops is a last resort and as long as things can be controlled with other resources, they must, “Barr. told CBS News “Face the Nation” in an interview that airs Sunday.

He said he agreed with Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chief Mark Milley that the federal government had “adequate resources” available to deal with the demonstrators but wanted US troops nearby if they were needed.

He also denied CBS News reports that President Trump last Monday called for the deployment of 10,000 active duty troops to quell protests that began after George Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody on May 25.

“The president never asked or suggested that we need to deploy regular troops at the time. It has been done from time to time in our history. We try to avoid it. “And I’m glad that we can avoid it on this occasion,” Barr said.

He confirmed that “some” 82 Airborne military police were brought to the area, but not to Washington, DC.

Facing national protests that turned violent in several areas with looting and arson, the president proposed invoking the 1807 Rebellion Act which he said would allow him to deploy military forces in the streets of America.

Barr also defended the transfer of protesters in front of St. Episcopal Church John, who had been damaged during a demonstration on Sunday, said the perimeter must be extended to other blocks around Lafayette Park.

Barr – who accompanied Trump as he crossed Lafayette Park and took part in a photo-op outside the historic church – dismissed the notion that it was a peaceful protest, saying “violent riots” had occurred around the park in previous days, where park police had repeatedly attacked.

On Monday, Barr said three warnings were given to the crowd to return.

“Park police face what they consider to be a very rowdy and disobedient crowd. And there were projectiles thrown at the police, “he said on CBS.

He denied reports that tear gas was fired into the crowd, although park police admitted that chemical agents were used.

“No, there is no chemical irritation. Pepper spray is not an irritating chemical,” Barr said.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
