European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas said on Saturday (4) that he hopes that the illegal flow of migrants across the eastern borders of the European Union (EU) will serve as a catalyst for common European migration rules.

Shinas was in Lithuania, on the border with which there is a significant increase in illegal arrivals of migrants from Belarus.

“The situation here is another signal for us in the European Union: now is the time to move towards a more predictable and comprehensive European migration policy,” Shinas told reporters.

“This is a political moment for the transition from firefighting to an architectural operation,” he added.

The European Commission has proposed a new pact on migration and asylum in 2020 to establish a common policy on these issues. But negotiations have stalled over the covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, the EU is increasingly concerned about a possible massive migration from Afghanistan, where the Taliban came to power in mid-August.

Illegal migration has sharply increased in Lithuania this year: more than 4,100 people have already been intercepted at the border, compared to 81 in the whole of 2020.

The EU accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of organizing these migration flows to Lithuania, Poland and Latvia in response to the bloc’s sanctions for suppressing the opposition following the disputed presidential election.
